Flags in Red Dwarf of the BBC

Red Dwarf Arm Patch

A British Sitcom set in the distant future. Red Dwarf is a nearly dwarf planet size space vehicle. Like a ship in the Navy it is run with fitness and perfection with rank and file. However a low ranking tech brings a black cat on board without permission and is put in cryonic jail. But then like Futurama - but way before - he gets out and things have went awry and he is in the distant future. His cat has evolved into a humanoid like fashionista and only a hologram and ships wise computer keep him company.

You can see the UK flag and USA flag on behind the 'hologram' man with the white T-shirt. In this show Hologram people have marks on their head denoting so.

Flag of Wales in Red Dwarf
Pilot Episode - 1988

During the first episode when Red Dwarf was fully staffed with people a funeral took place for a crew member from Wales, apparently.

Red Dwarf is a charming and wittily sci-fi sit-com hybrid. It is kinda' like What's Happening meets Star Trek Voyager & Futurama with a tiny dash of Benny Hill?

Baker Island Flag 2.0 - a reboot

Baker Island Flag - rebooted

After careful consideration and professional feedback from the 2012 Spring CBFA Meeting, thanks to Voron Xarya, a redesign is in order. No more skinny English Flag, rather five stripes. The five stripes by the lower hoist symbolize the five parts of the USA that are closest to the Australian Continent: American Samoa, Baker Island, Howland Island, Guam, and Rota of the Northern Mariana Islands.Believe it or not those five 'territories' of the USA are arguably geographically a part of Australia. America even has a small native marsupial population just like Australia - "Opossums!"
The five stripes by the upper fly represent the five US states with a pacific coast line.
But the central crab is still "universal-substitutive" - meaning it can be anything that remotely looks like a hermit crab.

Kermit the Frog and the Confederate Flag from The Muppet Movie 1979

Kermit the Frog - The Muppet Movie 1979
Notice Confederate Flag in the background

In the Original Muppet Movie from 1979, the Confederate Flag makes an appearance when Kermit visits the Bogen County Fair. The County Fair scene is full of cameos that include Bob Hope and Richard Pryor.

Note that the American flags appear in a similar fashion with Fozzie and Gonzo. However the Confederate flag is reserved as a background for Kermit only.

Jim Henson was originally born in Mississippi. Apparently Henson's childhood would have included playtime around the swamps, which no doubt played a role in the genesis of Kermit the Frog. If you take a close look at Jim Henson, with his long beard - he is has an iconic confederate general stature. However, when Henson became a mainstream icon he was careful to hide his Mississippi Accent.

Kermit standing proudly for Southern Pride?

Perhaps America is ready for a Muppet Civil War Movie? Muppet humor mixed with history, song, love, and dance? The Sesame Street Gang can play on the northern side. Since those Muppets are from NYC. Imagine Bert, Ernie, the Cookie Monster, and the Count in union blue. But Oscar the Grouch must be anti-Lincoln and pro-states rights.

The Muppet Gang fights for the south or at least play as southerners. Kermit and Fozzie will don the grey uniform. The cranky smart mouth old farts - Waldorf and Statler are picture perfect plantation owners - owning Ralph the Dog. But Sam the Eagle plays as Sam Houston who refuses to fight the north due to his patriotism for America. Basically Sam the Eagle counters Oscar the Grouch.

It'd be educational, fun, and quite neato. Of course regular people should play Lincoln, Davis, and other important Generals and soldiers.

The Quack Flags of Dr. Terminus - from Pete's Dragon 1977

Dr. Terminus with underling Red Buttons
Notice US flag in the background

Pete's Dragon was a Walt Disney film based upon an unpublished short story by Seton I. Miller and S.S. Field. The story centers on the friendship between a dragon and little boy. But the primary villain in the story is Dr. Terminus - a less than scrupulous town to town traveling quack.

American Quackery is something of a cult institution. At the previous turn of the century pharmaceutical agents has to peddle their tonics and drugs from town to town and rely on a certain element of charisma. Some were genuine while others shaded the truth, and some were out right frauds and schiesters.

Fast forward from 1907 to 2007 - American Quackery has reaching new heights of selling the public drugs they may or may not need. Again the same basic formula continues with with snappy sales pitches, paid actors, and enchanting music. Some of it useful, some not necessary, some play on fears, anxiety, ego and charm. But as it was then and more so now - some are a few outright frauds.

Drink this tonic or swallow this pill and you'll feel great!

M.C. Escher Flag - Concave and Convex 1955

Escher Cube Flag

At the moment the artwork of M.C. Escher has hit a high note in classrooms across America - honored by art and math teachers. M.C. Escher takes two subject areas from opposite poles. Math is linear, objective as a matter of fact logical way pallet, while art is a limitless expression equated with the non-logical in the heart of the beholder.
What is it that teachers and young adults like about his mind bending artwork?

To the right is a close up of the flag from his lithograph Concave and Convex 1955. The flag features three blocks reminiscent of the old Q*bert game neatly placed in a 'hexagonal box.' However the blocks can shift position within the mind's eye. It can look like black blocks facing towards to top, black blocks facing towards the bottom, like a six pointed star in two dimensions? If you don't see it give it a moment.

Maurits Cornelius Escher is relatively modern artist from the 20th century who lived from 1898-1972.

Is the flag hanging in under the archway? Or is it hanging over a road? I guess it all depends on your point of view.

Of vexillological delight is the hexagonal flag in the corner.

Police and Fireman fallen on duty flags

For Fallen Police Officers
in the line of duty

The fallen officer in the line of duty flag matches in pattern to the fallen firefighter on duty flag. Both flags are horizontal tri-bars. The colour blue is commonly associated with the police. Likewise fire trucks are often coloured red - thus a red stripe.

For Fallen Firemen
in the line of duty

Police and firefighters are like natural extensions of the city.  They must accept the call whenever it occurs and have confidence and courage to act with bravery.  Typically they have excellent instincts matched with excellence of strength.

Often it is people from firefighter or police families who make excellent military personnel.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome Vexilloids - Bartertown Official Staff

Semi-religious official and
Spokesman of Bartertown

Long long ago, before the Hunger Games there was Mad Max and a Thunderdome...

In 1985 the third movie of the Max Mad trilogy came out - Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome presents a clear and enchanting view of a post apoctylipic world. In the final quarter (1980s) of the Cold World the threat of a nuclear holocaust was real and present, every more so than terrorism.

But Mad Max presents a story where the world goes on. Things have changed, but the human drama stays the same. Politics and power struggles never go away.

Two Men Enter,
Once Man Leaves

But at Bartertown - disputes are resolved on an individual basis. Instead of a complicated legal system with lawyers - the community preaches that people with unresolved issues duke it out to the death and leave the rest of the community alone. People with disputes face off in the Thunderdome. The chant is "two men enter, one man leaves."

During the Thunderdome sequence a vexilloid makes an appearance. It features an elegantly fashioned black and white pole. The finial is a black ball topped with a silver wheel with wings.
Also note the Master of Ceremonies also has wears a Freemason pendant as a necklace.

Mad Max franchise is one of those odd series that arguable gets better with the sequels. But it is an Australian film after all and things often spin the other way down under.
