G.I. Joe American Hero & Rambo Patch

The Joe Team standing in front of the American Flag

GI Joe and Rambo were more than just feeling in the 80s. If you were an American boy born in the mid 70s and allowed to watch TV cartoons, these shows had a role in the foundation of your sense of American Patriotism.

GI Joe was created in 1964, launched with worry as a doll for boys. But this was one risk well worth its gamble. Boys didn't mind playing with dolls so long as they came with guns, weapons, and gadgets.

Insignia of COBRA
GI Joe dolls did well and in 1982 the popular small action figure set and comic book was created with Marvel Comics. Also introduced in 1982 was GI Joe's enemy - Cobra - an international terrorist organization bent of destroying freedom (see the video below). Cobra's insignia was of course the outline of a Cobra in red.

Rambo Patch

Another patriotic go USA icon of the 80s was Rambo. Rambo was originally a book - First Blood 1972 - by David Morell. Ten years later the Hollywood movie adaptation was made - First Blood - and starred Silvester Stallone as Rambo in 1982. Rambo would spawn two sequels, but in 1986 an animated version of Rambo for kids was created - Rambo and the Forces of Freedom.

Kid friendly Rambo featured a patch. It had an American Bald Eagle in flight - with talons extended to the lower left. The Eagle was superimposed on disc that featured nine red and white stripes - like the original Son's of Liberty. On the lower side of the disc is written the motto ' THE FORCE OF FREEDOM.'

Rambo's Friends with Rambo Patch

Rambo and the Forces of Freedom is a Yin and Yang compliment to GI Joe: An American Hero. GI Joe worked as team against a power hungry army that used terrorism to destroy human freedom. But animated Rambo fought solo - with some technical help - against General War Hawk in order to protect the, "Peace Loving People of the World." (see video below)

Insignia of the Transformers - Autobot & Decepticon

Insignia of the Autobot
who do not steal energy & cared about people

If you grew up in the 1980s then your introduction the word insignia may have come from a toy - the Transformers. Transformers were the it boy toy in the early 80s. They were basically vehicles that transformed into robots. So enchanting as these toys were that in the 2000s they would have a revival in Hollywood.

Like Yin and Yang there was division of powers between the 'good' robots and 'bad' robots. The good robots are the Autobots who are usually some kind of automobile, while the 'bad' robots are the Decepticons who are flying machines, except for the leader who is a gun and his lieutenant which is a magnetic recording device and master of other animal like robotic slaves.

Insignia of the Decepticons
who were Deceptive, stole energy & saw humans as worthless

The original toys came with a heat sensitive sticker. At room temperature or below the sticker would be black but once pressed, and then heated the insignia of the transformer would glow. This added another element to an already complex toy. Often times younger kids would be mystified when older kids would transform a complex robot, when it was beyond their capability. However there were many adults and too cool older children you couldn't master the transformation of some complex robots.

The Transfomers were part model toy car-airplane, part puzzle, part robot-doll, and their space in American-Japanese kid culture was cemented with well television show oriented for kids but spiced with adult topics.

This was a ground breaking toy at the right time and the right place. The joy of the toy planted a seed that bloomed nearly 20 years later. Who knows what will come in 20 more years - a live action Pokemon-CGI/5-D Movie like Avatar?

The Hearaldry of Harry Potter

Hogwarts United Coat of Arms

When a new student arrives at Hogwarts, they are assigned to one of four houses. This is done by the Sorting Hat - that talks. The Sorting Hat seems to read the intentions and feelings of the wearer and assigns the student via a magical dynamic and sense of proper destiny.

The four teaching teams at Hogwarts are Gryffindor the Lion, Hufflepuff the Badger, Ravenclaw the Eagle, and Slytherin the Snake.

Each house has its own livery of colours. Subsequently the Harry Potter Fan Base has created heralds for these houses at Hogwarts. J.K. Rowling tapped a nerve in English Folklore that has begotten a life of its own.

The House of Hufflepuff

Their emblem is the badger and the colours are black and yellow. The badger proverbially lives in the underworld, unseen by most muggles.

House of Slytherin

Their emblem is the snake and their colours are green and white. This animal is actually very nice. Muggles have an insatiable appetite to dominate the universe but the snake refuses, instead Muggles must learn to respect the snake.

House of Ravenclaw

Ravenclaw's emblem is not synonymous with its name - it is rather the Eagle. But in the final movie - Deathly Hallows 2 - there is a raven on the flag. There is also an eagle head on the crest of the helmet.

House of Gryffindor

The is house of Harry Potter. Its totem is the most famous of all - the Lion. The Lion is beloved by the Muggles and it is also the emblem for several nations - Scotland, Denmark, and England. Muggles and persons of magic are both enchanted by the power of Lions.

Vexillology's Ultimate Game - Golf!

Caddy Shack Movie Poster
1980
- the underbelly of golf

No game more effectively uses flags than golf. The objective of the game is to aim for a flag! This game has vexillology written all over it.

Golf has gone though its own cultural revolution, but since Caddy Shack and when the Tiger was let loose - the snooty ceiling was forever shattered. Golf is a game for everyone.

Here is an idea...perhaps Disney could make a Disney World Show Case Course where course or particular hole is thematic of certain nations? It'd be kinda' like miniature golf meets regular 'gargantuan' golf.

Think about it...In 2015 Walt Disney opens an Asian Theme Golf Course - Hole Number One, aim for the Vietnam Flag on a jungle setting next to peaceful rice paddies. Hole Number two - aim for a Chinese Flag and the hazard is a Great Wall. Hole Number three - aim for a Korean flag...and so on!

Flag of the First Tee Organization
Youth Leadership via Golf!
Although many in the Golf Establishment would certainly view such an effort as tacky, think about it! There already is the First Tee Program, which teaches kids good golf values. Who knows maybe Golf is the answer to world peace? If people took something from proper Golf Etiquette, the world would certainly be a better place.

Golf can be good, it's all what you putt into it.

Futurama Flag - by Matt Groening

Flag of the Earth Nation 2999 AD?

Futurama is an animated sitcom born out of the imagination of Matt Groening - who was responsible for the Simpsons.

In Futurama the hero of the story is a pizza delivery born who accidentally gets cryogenically frozen on January 1, 2000 and awakens on December 31, 2999. Much has changed - aliens from distant planets live on earth, robots are sentient, and techonology rules everything. But some things never change - our hero Fry is assigned to be a delivery boy, as determined by a talent microchip that matches people to their best job.
Logo of Planet Express

The result is a satire on culture, gadgets, robots and all sorts of space age antics. If Star Trek were to have a baby with the Simpsons - Futurama is what you'd get. Although the show is supposed to take place in 1000 years in the future - the show often mocks the modern day with a twisted and witty humour. Essentially people in the future are not so different from today - although they have marvelous technologies and can travel to the moon in a jiffy - the people of earth in 2999 are rather cynical, greedy and prone to stupidity.

The three main characters
Leela (purple hair), Fry (red hair), Bender (the robot)

In one episode Futurama takes on the issue of burning the Flag of Earth, which looks remarkably like the flag of the United States. The primary difference is that there are no stars, instead a cloudless view of the American Hemisphere in its place - on navy blue background. The flag is also called 'Old Freebie' instead of 'Old Glory.'

In the episode we are privy to Mat
Groening's view on the issue of burning the American Flag - although Groening never explicitly says so, you'd be a dim wit not to make the connection.

Comedy Central's Controversial Flags - South Park & the Daily Show

Flag of South Park
Imagination Land, USA

Two immensely popular shows on Comedy Central spawned two imaginary flags that lampoon and allude to the Confederate Flag Controversy, from a supposed 'comedic' point of view. These imaginary flags mirror the issues associated with Confederate Flag without mentioning it. The 'racist' South Park flag was created in 2000 while the anti-'whitey' flag was created in 2010.

School Debate on what to do about the Flag

In South Park's 4th season - July 5, 2000 - the town flag of South Park became the center of a controversy. South Park's most popular African American resident - Chef - claimed the original flag was racist. The original South Park flag showed a black figure being hanged and surrounded by four white figures.

Chef sees the flag as a blatant racist symbol, but many other residents are totally blind to Chef's point of view. Rather they cherish their flag as a cultural symbol of heritage and history.

Is the flag 'History' or 'Racism'?

In one scene the children debate whether or not to change the South Park flag. You can see the full episode by clicking the link below to South Park's Internet site.

Flag of Nat Turner Rebellion Catillion
Edited to say 'Like Mikey'

From the 'other' point of view the Daily Show did a comedic-commentary about an imaginary Nat Tuner Flag in an attempt to put the shoe on the other foot of persons who believe the rise of the Confederacy had nothing to do with slavery.

This fictitious flag was created in honor of the Nat Tuner Slave Rebellion in 1831. I have edited the Nat Tuner flag to read, "Like Mikey." However the flag that aired on Comedy Central used more incendiary language. You can see the more controversial flag in the video below.

Adoption of the Confederate Flag 150 years later

Original Confederate Flag

It may come as a surprise to many Americans what the original Confederate Federate Flag looked like. Well, here it is. It was adopted while the Capitol of the Confederacy was at Montgomery, Alabama.

The seven stars represent states that formed the Confederacy before the Lincoln Administration and bombing of Ft. Sumter in South Carolina. After the battle of Ft. Sumter four more states would leave the Union: Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. A little later Missouri and Kentucky formed rump pro-southern Governments. This resulted in a thirteen stared Confederate Flag.

There is something of a controversy as to who designed the first Confederate Flag. The new Southern government received thousands of proposals from the general population, many proposals conserved the stars and stripes pattern. No doubt anyone who submitted a flag and saw that it coincidentally matched their own design, would think they were responsible for it.

But in the end, a Southern Congressional Committee takes ultimate responsibility for the first design of the Confederate Flag.

Current Georgia State Flag
since 2003

Currently the Georgia State Flag utilizes the Confederate Flag as its main device but with the state seal in the center of the stars. The first design of the Confederate Flag is not as decisive than later versions or the Confederate Battle Flag. Rather it represents history more than a biased personal point of view.

Thus 150 years later since the adoption of the Confederate Flag from a certain point of view - it officially flies with a peaceful grace and as a symbol of history. Ironically this is due in part to the heritage vs racism flag debate.

The Holy TBN Network and Ruby Pier

In America's modern age two seemingly different songs of one spirit have been broadcast into the cosmos. One of the most dedicated modern churches whose pulpit streams from the heavens is the TBN Network. This virtual space age church utilizes over 77 satellites in orbit which broadcast to the various nations of the earth an evangelical spirit of Christ in several languages.

The TBN has a very unique corporate logo that is based on middle age European Heraldry which came into its own about 1111 years after the birth of Christ.

Logo of TBN Network

Upon the navy blue shield is a golden cross, on the center of the cross is a white dove pointing downwards. The supporter on the left side is a Lion, while the right side supporter is a white horse. On top of the shield at the 'helm' is the three letter designation TBN - which stands for Trinity Broadcasting Network. On the crest is a Christian gold and blue crown. There are two ribbons - in the compartment written in Old Northern European Script it is written Trinity Broadcasting Network. The second ribbon wraps around the Lion's belly flows up and behind the crown and then wraps around the white horse it reads - Rex Regnum around the Lion which mean King of Kings or acoustically (Reign Regal ). Around the horse it reads Fidelum Et which means Faithful & Truth or acoustically (Fidelity Is). Just to the left of the white horses knee is the modern corporate icon - TM (Trade Mark).

From another side of the American soul another spirit has shined its light into the heats of the American people. Although not as organized - it has a more intuitive and unstructured means of communion.
Ruby Pier with flag in background

Examples of this inspirational storyteller mode of communion are Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bachand Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom.

Although the mysterious storyteller side of the post modern American congregation has no official structure or herald, perhaps the pennant of Ruby Pier can fulfill this role? A version of this pennant was made in 2004 in the film adaptation of Five People You Meet in Heaven with John Voight.

Ruby Pier Pennant

In the film the pennant has yellow background with Ruby Pier written in red upon it, note seagulls in the background.

Old Libya Flag with New Malawi Flag

Rebel Flag of Libya 2011 &
Old Flag before Kadaffi

The flags of Africa shift like a slow and steady glacier. The new rebel flag of Libya is actually the old flag of Libya before Kadaffi came into power.

Before the 2011 Libyan Civil War, Malawi adopted a new flag due to a shift in political leadership.

Malawi abandoned The Red Sunset Flag and shifted the order of the colours. The Old Flag of Malawi is still paired with the flag of Kenya. But the Malwai-Kenya bond is outside of the "now." The new Malawi Flag since 2010 pairs up with the flag of Libya's Eastern Rebel Flag.

New Flag of Malawi

The flags of Malawi and Rebel Libya are bonded like yin and yang. Malawi has a white sun and white rays, while the Old/New Libya flag has a crescent moon. It is a perfect match of Sun and Moon or rather Day and Night. My primary research in flag study has discovered that flags can be paired up two by two.

Libya and Malawi represent of the great cultural divide within Africa. Although both countries are African Nations - they differ much in culture and customs. There are two great cultural divides within Africa - Black Africa and Arab Africa. Malawi is of the Black African sort while Libya is Arabian African.

Politically speaking, if the Western Kadaffi Loyalist flag should fall, it may herald that the flag of Saudi Arabia may also undergo a 'democratic revolution.' Saudi Arabia is a dictatorship - albeit a US friendly dictatorship. If this play with the USA dictatorship should fall it may give rise to an anti-US Democracy.

Libya's green flag is partnered with Saudi Arabia. It's interesting to note that Saudi Arabia has been a friendly dictatorship towards the US, while Libya has been a hostile dictatorship towards the US.

2011
A New pair of Flag Partners has come to awareness

There was some doubt about my flag symmetry idea when the flag of Malawi changed last year, since the apparent harmony between Malawi and Kenya was broken.

But their bond is not broken. Like the bond of love, it simply changes form, and is permanent. The Red Sun Set Flag of Malawi is still the partner to the current Kenyan Flag. However this bond exists outside of the now, as of 2011.

Likewise the dismissal of the Green Flag of Libya does not cut the tie between green flags of Saudi Arabia and Libya. Libya and Saudi Arabia will always have a connection to each other and to the United States.

March is Pisces Month

March beeginz under the Sign of Pisces. If thair waz ever an animal that dezervd to bee on a flaough it is the fish. The efekt of a flag rippling in strong wind would make it look like a phish swimming in water. However fishes on flags are rare.

Carp Fish 'Flags' in Japan

In Juhpan they have 3-D flags of sorts. They are vexilloids of fish, specifically the carp. There are many places in Japan, especially along river banks where the flying of carp has become festival like and jraws toruists.

Another flag with a fish on it belongs to the improvisational art hippie jaz band Phish. Phish has something of a quasi-reelijis mojo - with legions of smelly Phish fans who thrive off their riffs of noise in altered states like the Shamans of yesteryear.

Their singing ability is rather average, as no member of Phish would make it far on American Idol, rather their musical enchantment is anchored to their excellence in playing musical instruments and altered states of konshishnis.

Phish Hippie Art Band Flag

Phish was the post 60s in the 90s movement of counter culture. They tried to keep there vibes real, spiritual, and jenuin but the temptations of the krowd and komunal ego will always keep hippie art do movements like this in they're place and under the majik karpet.

Their form of "so called art" was seeded in the karmic marshmellow puffs of the Magic Dragon & John Lennon

Vice Presidents Day?

Official Vice President Flag Design

A day of Honor for #2?

Vice presidents were originally the runner up in the presidential election. They are also presidential trainees with on the job experience.

With President Tyler, Vice Presidents realized their potential as the emergency back up president.

Recently VPs are chosen in Yin and Yang like fashion to balance the presidential ticket in the hopes of getting more votes. Likewise their responsibilities have enormously grown.

Vice Presidents who do not become Presidents are Americas unsung heroes. You'd think a few book publishers would mass market an American Vice President Book every once and a while? Evey year publishers pump out US Presidential books! Come one, lets give the big number two some shelf space.

Vice Presidential Flag

Most people don't even now if their own state even gave America a Vice President. Ask your average Joe in Pennsylvania, "How many vice presidents came from Pennsylvania?" Most will not know. But two Grand All American Number Twos were made in PA - Vice President Biden - and George Dallas. Vice President Dallas was in office when Texas was annexed to the United States. Thus we have Dallas, Texas. So in a weird way the Dallas Cowboys inherit their name from a man born in Philadelphia.

Presidents Day with Beavis & Butt-head via Vexillology

Beavis as Betsy Ross

Beavis and Butt-head do vexillology in thier next to final 'normal' episode - #199 - Our Founding Losers. Beavis and Butt-head came to us out of the creative imagination/confessional of Mike Judge back in 1992. Beavis and Butt-head ran for five years from 1992 until 1997. The show is epic of youth culture in the 1990s. It aired just before the dawn of text head-zombies and instant pestering, and captured the national psyche on a diverse set of demographics.

Beavis accidentally standing on the US Flag

In this episode Beavis and Butt-head were supposed to lower the US flag at their High School - Highland High. However their consistent ineptitude shines its inglorious lime light as they bungle the simple act of lowering a flag - which any high school grad should be able to do. The Star Spangled Banner unpatriotically hits the ground. Soon enough they find themselves bickering and Beavis unintentionally steps on the American Flag.

However Mr. Buzzcut is witness to this tragic event and punishes them with a writing assignment, which is to write an essay about the founding fathers of the United States of America.

Beavis and Butt-head try their best. Their effort is geniune yet paltry. It is proverbially well below the American Standard.

The Provisional Confederate President - Jefferson Davis

Alabama's Confederate State Flag
at Jefferson Davis' Inauguration

The Confederate Government officially came into existence on February 4, 1861 and the provisional president was chosen - Jefferson Davis. Only six states had left the Union and formed the Confederacy - South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, and Louisiana.

Thus only six states 'voted' in Jefferson Davis as the 'Provisional President' of the Confederacy.

Texas would later join the Confederacy in the following month making Texas the first state admitted into the Confederacy, as the proverbial Vermont of the Confederacy.

Texas was the original Johnny Reb Come Late of the first batch, before Ft. Sumter. Likewise Texas' current fraternal flag twin North Carolina was the final Johnny Reb Come Late of the second batch after Ft. Sumter.

Jefferson Davis would be elected again under the Confederate Constitutional Election in 1862 as the 'First Constitutional' President. President Davis served in opposition to three US Presidents - Buchanan, Lincoln, and Johnson.

Back side of Flag

But 150 years ago today Jefferson Davis was inaugurated at the Montgomery, Alabama state house. The Confederacy did not yet have an official flag but it is reported that the Alabama State flag was raised.

This flag was double sided. On the front is a woman in a crimsion dress holding the Bonnie Blue Flag in her left hand. In her right hand she is holding a sword that is pointed towards the ground. The motto printed in all Capital Yellow Letter on the blue background reads, "INDEPENDENT NOW AND FOREVER." On the other side of the flag is a cotton bush with three red flowers and white cotton ready to be picked. On the bottom left side of the bush is a serpent. Below the Cotton Bush is a motto in Latin, written in the same manner as it is on the front, "NOLI ME TANGERE," which means DON'T TOUCH ME.

Happy Valentines Day 2011 with Villanova and Diet Coke

Valentines Day Flag

Valentines Day is the primary holiday in February. It overshadows Groundhog's Day and commands more attention than Presidents Day. Valentines Day is celebrated all over the world in different ways. For some it's a holiday for romance, for others it is a chance to send love to all, and for a few its a chance to make a buck or two.

Valentines Day has taken a life of its own in Japan. On February 14 only women buy chocolates, and only give them to men. But then a month later on White Day - March 14 - only men are supposed to buy cookies for women.

In US children give Valentines to everyone in their class - at least until middle school. But as an adults, only lovers give to each other. Right now the marketing people on Madison Avenue have given more gravity to romantic lovers love. Unfortunately this can lead to some lonely and or broken hearts. Perhaps this can also be a day for a universal love fest. Love what ever you got - your car, your sports team or favorite video game, your family or neighbors, your dog or cat, your heath, your favorite TV network? Just love it and feel no shame about it!

Villanova University Seal

The university seal of Villanova in Pennsylvania is featured today since it has a heart with an arrow though it. Villanova is a relatively Catholic College that won the NCAA Men's College Basketball Championship in 1985.

Close up of Villanova Heart
with Arrow on the Seal

In the center of the Seal is a bounded bible with red heart on top. The heart is pierced with a golden arrow crested with a crown. Behind the bible are a cross staff and sheapard's crook. The motto of the university is on ribbon and it says Veritas, Unitas, Caritas. This literally translates to Validation, Unity, and Caring. Or more traditionally Turth, Unity, and Love.

Love a Lot Bear

If your feeling down and think you have no one to love, just remember lessons of the Care Bears. The most appropriate Care Bear of the hour is of course Love a Lot Bear!

Weather a commerical, song, stranger, colour, feeling, TV preacher, bird song, or fluttering of a flag. The arrow of cupids love can strik from nearly any dimension if you let it! Where ever it comes from grab on to a soak it up!

Finally Coke has flown a heart flag campaign to raise money and awareness for women's health.

One Piece Flag

Flag of Once Piece

Every once and a while the world of Japanese Anime & Manga-Comic Books strikes a chord in Japan. Recently the Comic One Piece since 1997 has captured a big audience in Japan. In the US its considered child's play but in Japan the majority of people who read this comic and watch the cartoon are adults.

The flag of One Piece is a jolly roger - white skull and cross bones on a black background. The skull is wearing a yellow round straw hat with a red wreath-band. The skull also has eight teeth in a smiling position.

It is popular partly because it shows that trust and friendship can carry people through difficult times. It also inspires people to follow their dreams and fear not the obstacles in your path. Do not worry about what others will think, trust in yourself, and people who care about you!.

The intro in the third season sums up the spirit of One Piece, "Seek Freedom and the world will stand stretched out before your eyes. If the endless dream guides your spirits, follow it! Bear the will and conviction behind your flag!"

This show has truly inspired rather than just entertained.

Wookie Flag - Star Wars

In The Force Unleashed two designs are shown - a Wookie Flag, which looks like a royal flag, and the 'flag' of the Rebel Alliance.

This game takes place in between Episode 3 - Revenge of the Sith 2005 and Episode 4 - A New Hope 1977. In this video game we see the origins of the Rebel Alliance. Ironically Darth Vader is a catalyst for the movement.

Star Trek Federation Spock Coffin Flag

Arguably Star Treks most popular movie - Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - Spock dies from radiation poisoning while saving the fictional United Star Ship Enterprise from ultimate destruction.
Sulu is chosen to carry
off the Federation Flag

This flag of fancy from the imaginations of Hollywood and Paramount Pictures was waved in front of audiences in 1982. In this movie we learn of revenge, passion, and the logic of love.

Spock is an alien without religion with a seemingly religion of logic. Spock gives up his life for the crew in this movie. Although an imaginary sacrifice, such things have come to pass many times over in history.

We walk in shadow of countless officers, alien nations, and scientists who surrendered their lives for our benefit.
