One of the earliest and accurately recorded US flag is US flag found on the
Alliance, which is reversed the red and white pattern of stripes such that there were 7 white stripes and 6 red stripes. Likewise the canton had stars that were eight pointed, instead of the common 5 pointed stars.
Here are paintings of paintings of the Alliance with US flag. Amazing thing about the Alliance is that is was the last ship from that era of the Continental Navy, ordered to the sold out of federal possession on June 8, 1785, under US Gov version 1.0, via the Articles of Confederation. Note this was 2 years before Washington was elected the first president in 1787 under the US Gov. 2.0 via the US Constitution.
