Flag Day 2012 - the original red, white and blue

The Franklin & Adams Flag Flag of the United States - October 9, 1778

The genesis of the American flag is something of a great mystery. Things were happening and all kinds of 'rebel' flags went a flying. It's interesting to note Benjamin Franklin and John Adams' description of the US flag to a foreign dignitary.

The letter describes the "flag of the United States of America" and is dated to October 9, 1778.

(Dear King of the Two Sicilies)

"it is with pleasure that we acquaint Your Excellency that the flag of the United States of America consists of 13 stripes, alternately red, white, and blue; a small square in the upper angle, next to the flag staff, is a blue field, with 13 white stars, denoting a new Constellation. Some of the States have vessels of war distinct from those of the United States...but the Flag of the United States, ordained by Congress, is the 13 stripes and 13 stars above described."
(Signed)
"B. Franklin"

"John Adams"

So there you have it, the man now on the 100 dollar bill - describing the US flag with blue stripes - more than a year after the red and white only striped, congressional resolution of June 14, 1777.

The holiday we celebrate today is dedicated to the original patriots in the memory of a red and white only striped flag. But the truth is - many men in the army, marines, navy and other patriots most likely served, fought, and died under a red, white, and blue striped national banner.

Perhaps October 9th will become the blue striped flag day? Where we fly any recorded US flags that had blue stripes?

Note that congress may have made red and white official, but maintaining a coherent consistent flag pattern was at the bottom of the list of critical 'things to do.'

Benjamin Franklin and John Adams were professional and astute minds who would not have made an intentional mistake or over look important details. Also note there are lots of other recordings, descriptions and paintings of US flags with blue stripes:

1. Fort Stanwyk, August 1777
2. Fort
Mifflin, October 1777
3.
Captured HMS Serapis October 5, 17794. Arthur Lee letter on September 20, 1778
5.

Flags in Cheers - the TV show on NBC

Bottom end of US Flag

An old time photo of Cheers back in the day before prohibition. But the television show was set in the relatively modern 1980s. Note that each bar has its own type of drinkers and culture. Bars usually cater to certain types of customers of different economic and cultural ranges. The bar in Cheers was a more upscale a relatively middle upper class of customer.

The stars of the show are Cliff the mailman who is a know it all public servant and caustically admired for his wide range of trivial knowledge. Sam is the alpha of the establishment - a former professional baseball star and old school womanizing can do confident bartender. Norm is your average overweight earthy hardworking and humorous most beloved patron. He is mostly loved by doing nothing and being himself.

Flags in Clerks - 1994

White Banderitos Flags are circled red
Clerks 1994

In the classic 90s in a nutshell Clerks 1994 - little waving flags (aka Banderito Flags) can been seen on the lawn of the funeral home of a recently deceased school mate and x-love.

Directed by Kevin Smith - who subsequently became a key note filmmaker for 90s youth culture. It is raunchy, funny, silly, artful, deep and strangely optimistic. Clerks is a masterpiece of black and white cinema in the overly pre-packaged formula profit shareholder business-Hollywood machine of the modern age.

Notice the 'Baderito Flag' by the potted plant
Clerks 1994

Dante left, Randal right are running out of the funeral home after accidentally tipping over the casket. Next to the flower pot are little 'banderito' flags in white or perhaps yellow. These flags often communicate messages to construction crews about under ground hazards, marks of design or warnings for the public to keep off due to lawn spraying and other miscellaneous reasons.

Sea of Galilee Flag

Sea of Galilee Flag

A flag for the lowest fresh water lake of the earth. Composed of the famous Jesus Fish, water waves, and a harp.

In the canton we have a Hebrew Harp, sometimes called David's Harp. The base is white with black grounding for the multicolored strings. The rainbow colored strings denote an acceptance of all things and reflect the natural joy found in a rainbow. A rainbow is a positive symbol in all cultures. The seven strings are harmonious reflections of the seven tones in an octave - A, B, C, D, E, F, G.

On a navy blue background is a white Jesus fish symbol, facing towards the harp - as if listening to the sweet divine music. Under the Hebrew Harp and Jesus Fish are three waves - two of azure blue and in the middle one indigo.

Why do we have a harp? Because in the first testament this body of water is described as "Kineret," which sounds a lot like "harp" in Hebrew - 'Kinnor.'

A flag makes an appearance in one of the cult classic of 80s video gaming history - Manic Mansion 1987 by Lucasarts.

This game combines writing, imagination, and mystery with puzzle solving. Hand eye coordination are not necessary but an ability to think at put things together and experiment is important.

Elements of 1950s B-movie horror shows are mixed and mashed with 80s hip culture. It's 80s meets 50s shaken with George Lucas Imagination topped with a dash of Happy Days sprinkle.

No doubt someday a well done Manic Mansion movie will come to life - but it has to be set in the 80s! Unlike Monster House it must be released in September or October! If they make a modern 20-TTG movie (2000 text tween generation) it will stink monkey poo soup.

World Ocean Flag for Earth - in honor of Earth Ocean Day

The world oceans is essentially a vertical tri-bar of blue, green, blue.  Its design traces back to Wikipedian.  The colours and pattern are a natural fit for a 'World Earth Ocean Flag' and it has a small scientific undertone. The colours blue and green represent the earth and oceans of the world.  The yellow circle represents the sun surrounded by six stars which are a reflection of the 'six' continents.  Additionally the circle with stars also represent the carbon atom which is an essential component in biological systems.  The architect of the flag is a Wikipedian Vostok412.

2010 the year we make contact - flags and vexilloids

US and California Flag
2010 : the year we make contact - 1984

Two years ago was the time frame for a science fiction film set in the future from 1984 - 2010: The Year We Make Contact. It like many futuristic movies severely overshot the technological and politico situation. The Soviet Union went the way of the dodo and no visits to the moon since the 1970s.

Although the Soviet Union is nothing but an echo of our world culture, the cosmonaut continues to explore the heavens in harmony with astronauts.

US and Soviet Flags on Computer Displays
2010: the year we make contact - 1984

From the 1950-unto the 1980s the threat of a global nuclear holocaust hung in the balance between the two super powers after WWII. It seemed that this rivalry would last for centuries, but something happened, some thing good. Who is to blame for this goodness and end of Cold War tensions?

One man alone? I think not! I am certain that thousands of women and men help avert this global disaster and received no credit, and if you disagree with that then like Fonzie says - sit on it!

The joint Soviet-US Jupiter patch is visible over Roy Schiders left breast. It is an upside down triangle with one half red denoting the Soviet Union and the other half stripped and starred denoting the United States. In the center is the planet Jupiter.

South Park School Flag with reversed red and white stripes

US flag
in front of South Park Elementary, IM

South Park is a long running Generation X/Counter Culture 'Charlie Brownesque on Roids Rage' satire that focuses on US culture. Considered by some to be harsh and fowl, while others it is hilarious entertainment, and for some a form of religious-political orthodoxy. No subject is taboo - as the show pokes fun at the famous, infamous, and regular folk. The issues of racism, bigotry, politics, and other less than polite dinner conversation are a staple.

The US flag often makes an appearance in the immensely popular adult college oriented animated television show. Upon close inspection of the flag you may notice a small difference. It certainly looks like the US Flag but differs slightly - especially the flag at South Park Elementary, Imagination Land.

US Flag as seen with South Park School

Digitized Version of South Parks US Flag

Note there are still 13 stripes but the colour order is reversed. The official US flag has 7 red and 6 white stripes but the US South Park flag has 6 red and 7 white stripes. Also note there are 5 horizontal even spaced rows of 10 stars. The official star pattern consists of 9 horizontal staggered rows - 5 with six stars and 4 with five stars.

Badges and Emblems in Outland 1981

Plant Manager of Io outpost Con-Am 27
Mark Sheppard - Outland 1981

Outland 1981 is a gritty space lawman adventure. Starring Sean Connery as Marshall O'Neal working to keep order on one of the moons of Jupiter - Io. However the plant manager is pushing the workload to the extreme with illegal drugs for higher profit margins. Although technology has advanced - the temptation of drugs, greed, and machismo are still factors in work and play.

Marshall William T. O' Neal
Outland 1981

Notice logo on Marshall O'Neals left arm - three golden keys on green disc with a golden circle.

This movie shrewdly predicts the primary purpose of travel to distant moons in our solar system - capital gain via resource exploitation.

On Io they mine Titanium. Titanium seems to be a primary staple coveted in most sci-fiction movies.

Arm Patch of the Federal Security Agency 27

All security officers wear a hexagonal arm patch on the right shoulder. In a frame along the edges it is written 'FEDERAL SECURITY AGENCY' in yellow on red. In the middle is a six pointed sheriff's star and the number of the mining colony - 27.

Outland is the gritty middle less loved sci-fi child in between Alien 1979 and Blade Runner 1982 - that shows advances in human technology do not necessarily mean an advance in human morality-compassion.

Medical Badge of Dr. Lazarus

An even edge hexagonal arm patch is used to represent the medical personnel. It has a red frame and the popular winged serpent staff of healing. Dr. Lazarus here is played by Frances Sternhagen.

Company Logo of Mining Station
Con-Am 27

Company logo for the mining colony consists of rainbow coloured circles, starting from the inside - red, orange, yellow, green, black, blue, violet, purple, black and yellow. Along the center is the name 'Con Am' written in yellow on blue on a superior elongated octagon. Near the lower portion is the mining colony number - 27.

Adventure 1979 - Atari Video Game Vexilloid

Original Box Cover Art
Adventure 1979

On the original cover art for the classic video game Adventure 1979 for Atari we see a vexilloid like structure. On a pathway in between a maze with a dragon and castle are two men holding staffs of different sizes. Due to their height they are more than simple walking sticks. The staffs carried by the two adventurous men are primitive vexilloids.

Their clothing and hats indicate that they are familiar with alchemy and the magical arts. Thus their staffs will most likely have inscriptions, symbols, or other crystals embedded within them.

Adventure 1979 was the first successful action-adventure video game written for a home entertainment system. It offered challenge, variety and even anxiety.

The game play even holds up in 2012! No music but dragons and surprises will keep your adrenal glands going.

Close up - of Simple Staff Vexilloid
Adventure 1979 for the Original Atari 2600

The game was created by Warren Robinett. But back in the day - 1970s - giving credit to programmers was like way to weird. So he wrote in one of the most famous video game Easter Eggs.

We learn the name of the dragons Yorgle the yellow dragon, Grundle the Green Dragon, and the bad ass Rhindle the Red Dragon. But we never learn about the heroes of the story. I suppose some Adventure fiction is overdue. Or maybe a modern version that uses the cover art?

Flags in the movie Ghost 1990

Shakespeare Festival Flag Ghost 1990

The most original flag to appear in Ghost is the 'Shakespeare Festival' flag. It uses the colours red, white and blue. It is an announcement flag - telling the public that the Spring Street Repertory is celebrating the works of William Shakespeare. Sam Wheat and Molly Jensen have just walked out from seeing the play MacBeth - which coincidentally features a ghost as a key element.

Oda Mae Brown with unknown corporate flags

Ghost is a tear jerking, romance, comedy and moral story about life and love. Although shaded with a deep melancholy - the over all message is uplifting. Starring the Whoopi Goldberg as Oda Mae Brown. Oda Mae starts out as a less than honest psychic whose gift manifests after the death of Sam Wheat. She is also guided to a higher path. She learns to live with her gift and walk a better path.

Wizard of Oz Flag from the original book by

The Wizard of Oz flag is cut in a X-division into four fields. There are two versions of the flag. As states in Chapter 17 in Dorthy and the Wizard of Oz the colours are pink, sky-blue, lavender, and white.

In Chapter 5 of The Magic of Oz the flag is composed of red, yellow, blue and purple.

The first image of an Oz flag manifested in Glinda of Oz in 1920. It consists of a green shaded octagon with 'O' and 'Z' superimposed upon each other.

The badge for the Legion of Courage is held up by a vertically seven striped ribbon - four red and three white. The medallion consists of a cross with a knights helmet facing dexter with the motto of "COURAGE" underneath written in gold on a blue scroll.

Vexilloid of the Wizard of Oz - or rather the Page of Oz

Servant to the Wizard of Oz with Vexilloid

The Wizard of Oz is something of mysterious character. Originally from Kansas, he was wafted away to Oz during a hot air balloon ride gone awry.

In Oz the wisest of the wise is a wizard from Kansas. He maintains power through effective use of 'Smoke and Mirrors' appearing more powerful in a made up projection.
