Russian Fraternal Twin Flags: pt 11

Mordovia & Mari El

Mari El Republic Flag
The flag symmetry is obvious. The flags of these two Russian Republics keenly align by geometry and design. They have the same stripes of red, white, and blue - but are inverses with each other. In the center of both flags are cultural emblems at odds by 45 degrees.

Culturally the Mordovian and Mari are related as Uralic Peoples. This general group also includes Estonia, Finland, and Hungry. But the Mordovian and Mari languages differ much from each other and their more famous national cousins.

The Mari people amazingly maintained the ancient Marla Faith which existed before the arrival of Christianity. But not all Mari follow their traditional faith, a good percentage have joined the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Mordovia Republic Flag

The Mordovian people are divided as well. The Mordovians are mostly united in faith under the Eastern Orthodox Church but divided by language. The two main dialects of Mordovian are Moksha and Erzya. There is even a Mordovian Language that is considered a mix of Moksha and Erzya. It is called 'Shoksha.'

Furthermore since the Mordovians were ruled by the Islamic Tatar-Mongols, therefore there are Mordovians who converted to Islam. Most live in Tartarstan and have become 'Tatarfied' since they adopted Tartar customs, language and Sunni Islam. In balance to that, there are Mordovians who became totally 'Russified' by adopting Russian customs, language, and Eastern Orthodox Christianity.

Paradoxically the Mari and Mordovians are Russian people and yet not Russian people. They are ancient peoples of Russia and a part of a larger family of Uralic people that includes Hungry and Finland.

The Mari people like a rock maintained the Mari Way, but their western cousins the Mordovians like clay were molded into various fashions by the powers that be and totally abandoned the old polytheistic Mordovian Way. Although Mordovians are united under monotheism they are divided by Islam and Christianity.

Nizhny Novgorod & Tomsk

Flag of Nizhny Novgorod

The design similarity shared between Nizhny Novgorod and Tomsk is striking. They are near perfect examples of flag symmetry.

They both have white backgrounds. Both of their coats of arms feature an ungulate - a hoofed animal. Nizhny Novgorod has the wild deer, while Tomsk has a white domesticated horse. Surrounding the shied in the supporter and compartment positions are garlands of oak leaves. Intertwined within these oak leaves are ribbons. Nizhny Novgord has a blue ribbon, while Tomsk has a green and white ribbon. In the crest position of both banners are imperial crowns.

Flag of Tomsk

They are also geographically balanced. Nizhny Novgorod is a part of Europe while Tomsk is a part of Asia. They link the middle ages of Russia with the Colonial Era, as it was with United Kingdom. Nizhny Nogorod was established in the 1200s while European settlement in Tomsk took place in 1604. Instead of combating illiterate Native Americans like the English, Russians fought against literate Mongols, Turks, as well as non-literate expert hunter Tungus peoples.

These two provinces contrast like oil and water. Nizhny Novgorod has become bustling center of technology as Russia's Silicon Belt, while Tomsk is the bread basket.

Altay Republic & Kamchatka Territory
The Russian Xanadu

Flag of Kamchatka Territory

These are flags of two Russian Federal subjects in the Far East. The Altay Republic is the proverbial belly button of Russia - snuggled in between Kazakstan, China, and Mongolia. Kamchatka Territory is on the Pacific as the proverbial walrus tusk of Russia.

If you look closely at a map of Russia you can see a walrus. The head is facing towards Alaska, the front flipper hangs off of China and the back flipper runs into the Caucus region.

Both the flags of the Altay Republic and Kamchatka Territory have simple blue and white schematic - a white background with a blue strip along the bottom. Altay has an extra thin blue stripe while Kamchatka has semi-seal with three volcanoes with a red sun in the background.

Flag of Altay Republic

These Russian lands are natural wonderlands of East Asia. The Altay Republic has a majestic beauty similar to that of Wyoming while Kamchatka is Alaska's lost cousin but with much more volcanic activity. You can think of Kamchatka as being a hybrid version of Alaska mixed with Hawaii.

In fact, although Kamchatka is considered a part of Asia, tectonically speaking she is a part of the North American plate. Thus the land is more a part of the North America Continent than is Hawaii. Likewise the native people of Kamchatka are closely related to the some the native tribes in Alaska.

Kurgan & Jewish Autonomous Province

US STAMP with rainbow
Hanukkah Menorah 1996/5757

Since it's the Hebrew festival of lights - Hanukkah - it makes good sense to include Russia's unique federal subject created in honor of the chosen ones. The Autonomous Jewish Province is in far eastern Asia next to China. It was created ironically during Stalin's reign.

After Russia shed her Communist shell, the majority of Jewish people left. However there is a tiny minority of Jewish people who have decided to stay.

Even though most people in this province are Christian or some other faith, they have all become aware and even embraced Hebrew Customs - sort of like how some Jewish Families in US get Christmas Tress.

Flag of Autonomous Jewish Province

The flag of the Autonomous Jewish Province has a plain white background with a seven banded rainbow across the middle. The rainbow reminds us of the story of Noah and his special ark. It is with the story of Noah's Ark that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam merge as one - since they all agree - at least in Genesis. A fundamentalist Rabbi, Preacher, and Imam would all agree on the course of events in the beginning.

Another Russian province in complimentary contrast is Kurgan Province. The flag of Kurgan Province also has a white background but an emerald green stripe with an image of a burial mound. You can also find burial mounds all over the world - Japan, Ohio, Canada, and even Russia.

Flag of Kurgan Province

Kurgan Province is just north of Kazakstan and a part of West Asia, subsequently there is a good minority of Islamic Russians who are mostly Tartar, Bashkir, and Kazak. Thus the colour green is appropriate, since green is an Islamic colour. Just look at the flag of Saudi Arabia or Libya.

Geographically Kurgan Province is comparable to a county in North Dakota, while the Autonomous Jewish Province is like a rural county in Idaho.

Kurgan and the Jewish Province are at the East and West ends of Siberia. Most people living in either province are Russian, but the tribes of Issac and Ishmael are essential elements of Russia that can not be ignored but rather celebrated.

Bryansk and Orenburg

Flag of Bryansk

Just in time for the Christmas Season - we have two very special flags. One flag unites Islam with Christianity while another seems to celebrate Christmas.... with Communism? What is going on here!? Shall we take a closer look?

Bryansk and Orenburg are Russian Provinces at the doorstep to Europe and Asia. Bryansk is next to Ukraine while Orenburg is next to Kazakstan. Never mind what you have falsely learned from the comical movie Borat, most ethnic Kazaks look more like Jackie Chan than a hairy olive toned Mediterranean sailor.

The flags of Bryansk and Orenburg both have red backgrounds. Coincidentally both have seals that are surrouded by a garland of oak leaves with acorns. Weaved within the oak leave garland are ribbons. Bryansk has a red ribbon with yellow pinstripes on the left and on the right, a green ribbon. Orenburg has a blue ribbon that intertwines on both the left and right.
Flag of Orenburg

Amazingly Bryansk maintains a bit of Communist heraldry with the hammer and scythe in the crest - accidentally crowning the proverbial X-mas tree. If you gotta' problem with that, there is mortar in the inner shield of the 'Commie Christmas Tree' that you can direct your complaints too.

On the other hand, Orenburg mixes two faiths at perpetual odds - via an Eastern Orthodox Cross and the crescent moon of Islam. Together these two flags honor Communism, Islam, and Eastern Orthodox Christianity on blankets of red.

Perhaps Russia alone is the only nation that would allow such a varied diversity on the banners of her 'national billboard.' Russia truly has gone where no nation has gone before - she tried it all: Fascism, Communism, Islam, Theocracy, Cold Lonely Empty Space, Mongol Colony, Dictatorship, Imperial Empire, Feudalism, Racist Democracy, PC Democracy, any kind of you name it - Revolution...Russia has been though it all. In the end, she always came home and knew when it was time to do the right thing.

Nenets and Yamalo-Nenets
Flag of Yamalo-Nenets
Region in Asia

Nenets and Yamalo-Nenets are Russian Federal Subjects. Russia is mostly divided into provinces and territories (Oblasts & Krais). But there is another category that is shrinking -the autonomous region or in Russian an Okrug.

What this means...this is going to be a bit confusing... is that both Nenets and Yamalo-Nents are still a part of another federal subject while also being a federal subject themselves. Nenets is within the province of Arkhangelsk and Yamalo-Nenets is within Tyumen Province.
Old Man Winter is a Nenet, ring the bell
on his staff
and your dreams come true

Autonomous regions in Russia are basically special zones dedicated to a particular ethnic group, that don't make it as a republic for whatever reason. These northern autonomous regions take their name after the Nenets ethnic group. The Nenets people are sort of like Eskimos or Inuit of North America. They are distantly related cousins but - Inuit and Nenets differ much in culture, language, and customs. They do not build igloos rather the Nenets like Native Americans used to do - build tepees. The traditional lifestyle of the Nenet people revolves around reindeer herding.

Coat of arms of
Yamalo-Nenets
Subsequently the essence of the reindeer is an icon on their flags. The complex geometric stripe is supposed to represent reindeer antlers. Nenets has eight blue reindeer antlers rooted to the blue stripe, while Yamalo-Nenets has seven white reindeer antlers rooted to the white stripe. Below the Yamalo-Nenets 'blue reindeer stripe' is a large solid green stripe, and below the 'white reindeer stripe' of Nenets is thin red line.

Coincidentally the colours of Christmas are red and green, and it has been authenticated by Christmasologists that many of Santa's reindeer were born in the Nenet Regions.

Nenets and Yamalo-Nenets are two parts of Russia in a perpetual winter wonderland. Both of these autonomous regions have Arctic Ocean beach front property. Like Yin and Yang they straddle the north point in between Asia and Europe. Nenets is on the Western-European side of the Ural Mountain North slope while Yamalo-Nenets is on the Eastern-Asian side.

Amur Province & Magadan Provice

Flag of Magadan Province

The flags of Russia's Amur and Magadan pair up harmoniously by colour and design. Harmoniously both flags have blue waves with white crests. The waves of Amur are soft with only one white crest, while the waves of Magadan are sharper and it has two white crests. The upper-sky portion of both flags are red.

Both provinces are in East Asia, next to China and Japan. Magadan has a shoreline on the Sea of Okhotsk while Amur Province lies along the northern border of the Amur River.

Flag of Short lived
Far East Republic

Magadan & Amur province were both a part of the short lived Far East Republic from 1920-1922, under president Krasnoshchyokov.

The Amur River makes the Top 10 List of Longest Rivers of the World - at position number nine. Amur in Chinese literally means Black Imperial River. Amur Province is landlocked but Magadan has a shoreline but it freezes over in the winter.

Flag of Amur Province
aka the Black Imperial Province

The Russians arrived to this hemisphere in the 1600s, in the same era that Virginia and Massachusetts were settled. Both regions have cool summers and bitter winters. Certainly the residents of Alaska would feel comfortable in Magadan, while people from Idaho could mistake Amur for home. Maybe some day Russia will make Amur tater-tots via an Ida-Amur Company?

Kabardino-Balkaria & Bashkortostan

Flag of Bashkortostan

Here are two Russian federal subjects with similar flags. The Republic of Bashkortostan and the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria. There flags are both horizontal tri-bars with white in the middle, blue up top and green of different shades on the bottom.

The symbol on the flag of Bashkortostan is the Kurai Flag that has seven petals that represent the seven tribes of the Bashkiri that brought unity to the nation. The symbol of Karbadino-Balkaria represents the highest 'twin peak' mountain in all of Europe - Mt. Elbrus.

These two republics are on the fringe points of Russia's traditional borders - the Ural Mountains and Caucus Mountains. Both Bashkortostan and Kabardino-Balkaria are on the tipping point between Asia and Europe.

Russian Republics are 'federal subject-provinces' that represent a certain ethnic. In this case the Bashkiris, Karbars, and Balkaris. All of these Eurasian ethnic groups are dominantly Muslim.

Flag of Kabardino-Balkaria

Karbardino-Balkaria are two different ethnics. By tradition Balkars are the higlanders while Kabardinos live in the 'low' valleys.

The flags of these two Islamic Russian Republics have been peaceful. Bashkortostan and Kabardino-Balkaria illustrate that Christians and Muslims can live side by side in harmony.

Tambov & Ivanovo

Flag of Ivanovo Province
Moscow's Secondary Gurad to the East

The flags of Tambov & Ivanovo Provinces align by my 'flag symmetry' concept. Both flags are basically divided from top to bottom in the middle. Their right-hoist sides are red and the left-fly sides are blue. Both flags feature a heraldic shield. Tambov has a torch and weaving spinner while Ivanovo has a bee hive and with three large bees. On the crest of both flags are crowns.

These Russian Provinces are two territorial 'clicks' away from Moscow. If you can think of Moscow of being the center of the Russian Doll - Tambov & Ivanovo would be the second doll from the center. Likewise Leningrad Province & Ulyanovsk Province (first Russian post) would be the third doll from the center since they are three territorial 'clicks' away from Moscow.

Flag of Tambov Province
Moscow's Secondary Guard to the South

Ivanovo have a Yin and Yang aspect of the Russian Soviet Era. Ivanovo Province was home to one of the first Soviets to form in 1905, years before the birth of the Soviet Union. However Tambov Province was home one of largest anti-Soviet rebellions in 1920-1921. The Soviet Union officially came into existence in 1922.

Karelia and Dagestan

Flag of Karelia

The flags are 180 degree perfect inverts of design by colour and pattern. Karelians and Dagestani people are nations that were adopted and colonized by Russians Czars.

These two flags represent Russian Federal Subjects classified as Republics - which means they are nations within the nation of Russia. Karelia is in the far north of Russia on the edges of Scandinavia while Dagestan in the far South of Russia on the edges of the Asia Minor.

Flag of Dagestan

Karelians are close cousins to the Finnish people, while Dagestani people are separated cousins of the Turks. They are a proverbial union of the Russian North and South.

Here is a tip to distinguish these two Russian Republics Flags that look so a like. The
Dagestani are blood brothers in the South of Russia connected by flags to their blood brothers in the North. Now take notice of where the red - blood - stripe is located. It mirrors their geography, relative to Moscow.

Karelia would be a nice place to visit but remember to bundle up. It is rumored that the Chief Elf at Santa's Workshop for born in Karelia. But if you're looking for action and a perilous Indian Jones adventure, be sure to visit Dagestan.

Russian Fraternal Twin Flags: pt 1

Leningrad & Ulyanovsk

Flag of Leningrad Province

My primary work in flag study revolves around pairing up flags with design synchronicities. These uncanny alignments of design and colour occur with US State Flags, Australian Flags, Japanese Flags and even Russian flags.

The coincidental alignments offer hard evidence for synchronicity - or in the ancient way of looking at things - as the mysterious footprint of providence.

Leningrad Province & Ulyanovsk Province are Russian federal subjects whose pattern mimics each other and the pattern of Russia's national flag. Coincidentally Vladimir Lenin was born in Ulyanovsk Province in 1870. And oddly Ulyanovsk Province matches up with a province named after Lenin - Leningrad Oblast! St. Petersburg used to be called Leningrad during the Soviet Era, but has since reverted to its classic name after the fall of communism.
Flag of Ulyanovsk Province

Russia does not have states like the USA or Australia. Rather they call their sub-national divisions 'oblasts' which is equivalent to province in English.

Both flags have white dominantly on top as the 'sky.' In the middle both have blue waves. The bottom of both flags utilizes red. Leningrad Province has red waves, while Ulyanovsk Province has a red stripe. The provincial coat of arms are found of both flags.

A balanced coat of arms alignment is that Leningrad has white rampart while Ulyanovsk has a white column.

December is Sagittarius Month

Flag of Massachusetts with an archer

The Sagittarius is one of the unique signs of the Zodiac represented by two essences - sometimes a human archer and other times a centaur archer. Which is it? Both it seems. In honor of the cosmic archer, here is a flag with a Native American archer - Massachusetts.

Weapons make several appearances on flags but only a few have the bow and arrow, an ancient tool known to all the tribes of man.

The flag of Massachusetts has a Native American Archer. In his right hand is a bow resting on the ground and in his left hand is an arrow pointed downwards.

Perhaps the most famous Centaur can be found on a Remy Martin bottle. Although the Remy Centaur uses the more primitive spear, than a bow and arrow.

Looking for a special gift this Christmas? How about some fine champagne cognac? Perhaps Remy Martin could have a sale during the month of December in honor of the cosmic Centaur and holiday season?

Flag for persons mixed Jewish and Buddhist Faiths

The Jewish-Buddhist mixed heritage flag is based upon a combination of modern flags for both cultures.  Although this may seem like a new idea, mixed Buddhist-Jewish marriages have taken place before the Rise of the Roman Empire. Since Buddhism arose before the birth of Christ, and rose to prominence during the Jewish Exile in Babylon.

Additionally in the afterglow of Alexander the Great's union of East to West, India entered a Buddhist version of Camelot or rather "Buddha-lot" phase when Emperor Ashoka embraced Buddhism in an empire that included parts that are now Iran, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, and Myanmar.

Yet today, there is a growing population of persons who have one parent born of the Jewish faith and one of the Buddhist path.  Countries like Russia, Canada, and the United States are currently the leaders of persons born with spiritual connections to Abraham and Buddha.

This banner is a birthright flag for persons who happen to have a spiritual heritage to both wisdom traditions.  Additionally it is for persons who identify as both Buddhist and Jewish.  Sometimes people refer to these individuals as Jewboo, Jubu, Buju, or Jewbu.

List of Famous Persons of mixed Jewish and Buddhist Faiths

The spirit of Iron Man is potentially mixed Jewish and Buddhist since the character came out the imagination of Stan Lee during the Vietnam Crisis, when the cultures of American Judaism and Vietnamese Buddhism mixed to a certain extent.

Christmas Holiday Card of 2008

Back in 2008 I made another Christmas Holiday Card. It featured the soul mate states of Rhode Island and Indiana. Although they are different colours they have several overlapping harmonies.

They complement each other very well. Rhode Island and Indiana are the only US State flags to have a complete 'Betsy Ross Circle' of 13 stars. Although Indiana has six more on the inside since she was the 19th state, but both of their stars are coloured gold. In harmonious balance, Indiana has a torch while Rhode Island has an anchor. These are man made devices that work with opposite elements of fire and water.

Coincidentally when you combine the ancient alchemical symbols for fire (a triangle pointed up) and water (a triangle pointed down) - you get the star of David. Likewise if you combine the anchor and torch on these two flags it sort of looks like a Catholic Cross.

These cards have been decorated with two ancient scripts - Hebrew and Aramaic. Likewise Rhode Island is the older state and was home to the first US Synagogue. On the other hand Indiana is a younger state and home to one of the most famous US Catholic Cathedrals at Notre Dame. Likewise Christianity is younger than Judaism and it's good bet that Jesus was familiar with Aramaic.

Jericho on CBS

This is the Jericho Flag from the television show Jericho. The series had a two year run on CBS from 2006 until 2008. A key marketing element used a new American Flag design.

Jericho
is a post-apocalyptic action-drama that took place in Kansas.

Although the series was canceled in the first year, a dedicated fan base was able to resurrect the show for a second season. Jericho has found new life in comic books. There are even dreams of a Jericho movie in the works some day.

Jericho transferred to comic
book from TV land, although
there is little comedy in this comic

This Jericho flag has 13 stripes in a vertical pattern with twenty one stars in an octagonal position.

Another TV show that jumped into the comic book universe was Quantum Leap. Comic books provide an excellent respite for shows that cultivated a strong fan base.

Maybe Northern Exposure, X-files, the Greatest American Hero, and other shows with cult fans could find new life in the comic books?

Hey TV executives!!! It's cheap, fun, and profitable!

Imagine ABC TV Comics Issue #1 that plays out beloved and canceled shows? Love Boat, Fall Guy, MASH, etc?

Swedish Thanksgiving 2010

Flag of Sweden at a
Car Dealer ship in the USA

Swedish-American history is often overlooked. The Swedish were the first Old World people to take up permanent residence in the Delaware Bay in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Western New Jersey. This chapter of Nordic-American history ran from 1638 until 1655. The first run of Nordic American history took place at the turn of the first millennium with Leif Ericson around 1001 AD.

American history books gush over Spanish, English, French, and Dutch settlement in the New World. Why don't the Swedes get some kind of Colonial American Glory? Why isn't there some romantic Swede-Native American story that is told over and over, like the Mayflower or Pocohantas? Can you think of any honored Swedish Colonials? If the Swedes didn't come to America, we probably wouldn't have Lincoln Logs or Log Cabin Republicans.

Perhaps Peanuts could do a Holiday Special commemorating the Swedish landing at the Delaware Bay. It was in the wake of Sweden that America's first colonial capitol came to be - Philadelphia.

Worried about what to bring to the next Thanksgiving? How about Swedish Meatballs?

The Colours of Sweden at an
American IKEA in Pennsylvania

In honor of things Swedish we can appreciate the two Flagship Companies of Sweden: IKEA & VOLVO. If you ever visit these places you may find a Swedish Flag flying over head. Swedish flags do not create any issues but imagine if Honda or KIA dealers were to fly the flag of Japan and Korea at their dealerships?

However the lovable and mostly neutral Swedes can get away with displaying their nations colours.

Thanks to Swedes/Finns and Frank Loyd Wright's Son we have Lincoln Logs
the Finns were still united with Sweden when they colonized the Delaware Bay & they brought over "Log Cabin" technology that Brits were ignorant about
Here the Colours of Sweden are honored in the flag of Philadelphia, which is the oldest official City Flag in the Entire USA

Joint GWAV & CBFA Meeting 2010, Part V

John Purcell holding up an odd misprint
of the Ohio State flag that
requires some assembly with scissors

The final presentation was given by John Purcell, a former NAVA president and primary author of American City Flags - 150 Flags from Akron to Yonkers. Purcell's presentation was entitled Colors and Controversy: The Flags of Our 50 States - How Our States Got Flags and Why It Took So Long.

Purcell gave us an overview of the how the fifty states got their flags. For a good majority it was mostly due to need. At functions where state representatives met, in all sorts of events from athletic, social and political - the various delegations often needed a state flag to represent their group.

However each state flag has its own particular story. Some flags were not created for a caucus need, but rather for state pride and or historical reason.

I asked Purcell which state flag reflects the design of the US State flag the best? Before Purcell could respond several people volunteered an answer - 'Ohio, Texas, and Georgia.' But Purcell's choice of which state flag looks most like the federal flag was, "Hawaii."

An open question? - Which US State flag looks most like the US national flag? Ohio, Texas, Georgia, or Hawaii? Post your answers here!

TEXAS

Two big red and white stripes, Texas trumps the flag of North Carolina since NC has dates and letters on it.

HAWAII

Hawaii's basic design is like the US flag with a canton and stripes. But no stars and blue stripes? And a British Flag!

GEORGIA

13 Stars like the Betsy Ross design, and three big stripes. However its the design of the first Confederate Flag.

OHIO

Stars and stripes! but the shape is wrong and there is a red dot with a white circle around it?
