Zip Code Flag for 50011 - Iowa State University

Whoa!  By sheer cosmic luck the Zip Code Flag for Iowa State University at Ames has flag that matches its state flag, which looks like the flag of France.   Usually Zip Code Flags have five vertical stripes, witch each colour representing a number.  The fat blue stripe under the canton represents the number five.  Since zero and one repeat next to each other the stripes merge to form the pattern.

Zip Code Flag for 40022 - Finchville, Kentucky

Kinda' looks like the flag of Ireland right?  Nope is the Zip Code flag for 40022, which is in Kentucky.  Finchville to be exact.  In this case green represents 4, white represents 0, and orange represents 2.  Usually there are five stripes on a zip code flag.  But since zero and two repeat next to each other the flag gets an odd look.

The Zip Code flag for 10004 is for Lower Manhattan.  Since the Statue of Liberty uses 10004, the field colours are red, white and green.  These colours are similar to Italy or Mexico, just by mere coincidence. But if you turn your head you might be thinking Bulgaria?

Zip Code Flag for 90210

Zip Code Flags are based upon the zip code.  Basically the colours represent numbers.  The first part by the flag is the canton and support.  The coloured USPS style eagle with pink support represents the number 9.  The rest of the colours represent the other numbers of 90210.  In our case: white represent "zero"; orange represents "2", and red represents "1".

Note that zip codes are fluid and do not always congeal with municipality needs, thus many people get their local geography in knot.  Subsequently most people get lost in the double speak of referring to place by its official geographic municipality boundaries and postal routes.

In any case this the postal zip code flag for 90210.  Note that all of Hawaii, Alaska, California, Oregon, and Washington all start with a number 9.  Thus all cantons of these states will be pink.

Blue and White Pennants from Whisper of the Heart 1997 or Mimi o Sumaseba 1995

Kono Eiga wa Ole no Nippon

Anyone who has lived in Japan will recognize that Studio Ghibli captured the essence of life in Japan.  I discovered this movie before the might of that magical mouse.  This post is for all my Kansai Gaidai Homies!

Dreams really do come true.  Of vexillological note are the white and blue pennants found on an old sailing model vessel.   They can be seen on the tops of the masts.

Here is the entire panorama you never get to see in the movie.  You're gonna have to slide to left or right to see the entire antique store.   Enjoy!

Sales Banners in Whisper of the Heart 1997

A 100 yen (about 1 dollar) sale sign can be seen in the background.  It is yellow with red print.
You can see awning banners in red in front of our heroine.
Hard to see are the Train banners hanging from the middle of the cart. If you lived in Japan before the "Ketai Denwa" revolution you will recognize this film.
Here a store Keio has a long building banner-flag announcing that shopping is great.

Sales Flags in Whisper of the Heart 1995

Zissou Flag from the movie Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004

The Zissou flag is square shaped.  It is primarily composed of the colours white, blue, yellow, red, and light green.  In the movie it gets altered by Steve Zissou's long lost son who adds four symbols to the corners.

In the upper hoist side is a red letter E with a life preserver.  The E stands for Esteban du Plantier who was Steve's best friend who is attacked by the Jaguar Shark.  Esteban is played by Seymour Cassel.  In the upper fly side is a red letter K with a dolphin.  The K stands for Klas Daimler, the German second in command, who looks deeply up to Steve Zissou played by William Dafoe.  In the lower fly side is a red letter B with an anchor.   And finally in the lower hoist side is the letter N with a octopus.  The N stands for Ned, Steve's long lost son played by Owen Wilson.

SPOILER ALERT: DO NOT CLICK VIDEO IF YOU INTEND TO WATCH THE MOVIE

Scuba Diver Pennant from Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004

In the film Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004, starring Bill Murray, a diver pennant flag appears.  It is best seen during the hot air balloon scene.

Here Cate Blanchett sits opposite Bill Murray in a balloon connect to ship, on the sea, in the air, with a scuba diver flag in the on its end.

The blue and white scuba flag pennant with a white silhouette of a diver is probably the best type of scuba flag since persons unfamilar with the abstract diver flags of "Alpha" and white striped red flag can easily make sense that this flag is related to scuba diving.

Operation Hennessey Flag in Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004

The flag for Operation Hennessey appears in the cinematic draughmarkedymy (dramatic-artistic-comedy) Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004.  This film is a quiet visually appealing narration on life.  Part satire, part art house, part comedy, part action, part drama, part whatever, it is proverbially a buried treasure under the sea, that has gained a cult classic status.  It stands apart of the regular humdrum Hollywood action-hero-love drill-set, making fun of itself and leaves the audience guessing.  It also fits into the timeless class or cinematic classics as a retro movie set somewhere in the 1970s, as it was made in the 20-ohs.

Of vexillological interest is the Operation Hennessy Flag that is composed of the colours black, white, and grey.

Yankee International Maritime Y-flag from Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004

The Yankee International Maritime Coded Flag for Y appears as a car flag in Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004.  It has something written upon it which is nearly impossible to determine.  Zissou is sitting in the back wearing a red knit cap.

Buddhist Prayer Flags in Dolphin Tale 2011

What is it about dolphins?  They just steal the show and glow with youthful excitement.  Of vexillological note are the appearance of Buddhist prayer flags.  Usually these flag can be found in abundance around Mt. Everest, Tibet, and Nepal.  The story about these flags is that they are supposed to carry positive well wishing hopes and peaceful vibes as the wind causes them to bend with a breeze.

They appear as decorative items on the crows nest in the Dolphin Tale movie.  There is also a reddish mast pennant giving this special spot some character.
In contrast to the spiritual essence of the colourful prayer flags, fun and happy western colour pennant streamers play a similar role.  In this case they create a charming environment.

Colourful streamer pennants are like amusement park lights for the day.
Here the typecast teacher stands in front of some colourful pennants.

Racing Pool Pennants from Dolphin Tale 2011

Racing pool pennants of yellow and blue appear in Dolphin Tale 2011.  The pennants can be seen along the background and are reflective of the school colours.

Here is a close up of the pennant in all its glory.
A reporter is at the pool and blue and yellow streamer pennants, formally called bunting, can be seen all along the pool.

Semaphore Flags in Waterworld 1995

Semaphore flags appear in the 1990s post apocalyptic future movie that has madness to the fury max - Waterworld 1995.  During the assault by the smokers on a self sustaining atoll semaphore flags are used to coordinate the attack.  The flags are old and tattered in this resource and material poor civilization.

One flag used by the port semaphore is the international code for "P"-Papa which is a white flag with a blue frame, in his right hand.  In his left hand is the international code for "V"-Victor which is a red X on background of white, which is similar to the flag of Florida.

The starboard semaphore is holding the "J"-Juliet flag in his right hand which is a horizontal tribar of blue, white, blue - which is similar to the flags of Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Honduras.  In his right hand he is holding the "K"-Kilo flag which is yellow and blue - which is similar to the flag of Ukraine.
As batteries and radios are hard to come by, communication with flags has become a standard protocol due to its cheap and energy efficient costs.

Here the crew furiously waves the flags so that a mad man in a road rage max should stop shooting.  But the gunner is mad to the max, and cannot hear nor see the signal to stop firing.
