Other Vexilloids from Trading Places 1983

 

The stain glass works image is from the classic Christmas-New Year's Holiday celebration film Trading Places 1983. Several coats of arms can be seen in the windows, including the arms for the UK, Longon, and what looks like Harvard. 

On the back of The Wall Street Journal an advertisement for the Apple II personal computer is visible on the back.  Who knew, this little computer company would grow and grow to become the great corporate oak of 2020.

Barely noticeable in the background is Christmas Holiday banner flying from a flag pole on a building.  It is red flag that is impossible to determine what is reads. 

The ancient question of hereditary vs environment.  Which factor plays a bigger role on shaping a man?  No doubt hereditary plays a critical role in shaping a women and providing her or him with a certain advantage over others.  Likewise for men who inherit 6ft genes, get romance handed to them on a golden platter.

Note the logo of Jamison scotch can be seen, which employs a coat of arms. 

 

 

 

Pennsylvania and City of Philadelphia Flag in Trading Places - 1983

 

During the Heritage Club humiliation scene the flags of Pennsylvania and the City of Philadelphia appear in the background.  The best shot of the flags when the camera zooms on Clarence Beeks, the covert security expert. The flag of Philadelphia is on the left behind Beeks' right shoulder.  It has a light blue color and you can see the Goddess Ceres holding a cornucopia.  On the right side of the image, behind the left shoulder of Beeks is a dark blue flag with three sheaves of wheat.   A gold fringe and gold tassels are visible as well. 

 

From left to right is the US flag, Heritage Club flag, city of Philadelphia flag, and Pennsylvania state flag. 

The flag of Philadelphia is vertical tribar of sky blue, yellow, and sky blue.  In the middle yellow section is Philadelphia coat of arms.  The colors are based upon the flag of Sweden which planted the first permanent Old World colony in the Pennsylvania and Delaware.
 

African Pride Flag in Trading Places 1983

 

The Pan African Pride flag makes an appearance in the Trading Places 1983.  The colours also do a swell job of echoing the spirit of Christmas, since they include red and green. 

The Heritage Club Flag - Trading Places 1983

 

It is funny how Hollywood sometimes conforms itself to star, and in 1983 it made way for Eddie Murphy to shine in the film Trading Places.  In the background is the flag of the 'Heritage Club' of Philadelphia.  It is a horizontal tribar of green, yellow, and green. 

The fictional Heritage Club of Philadelphia has a flag flying from the side of the building.  This movie plays the rags to riches theme, but also riches to rags, and makes a statement on high society and the city poor. It is classic 1980s movie that pulls hard punches, and not afraid to show some the lewd humor of the time.

In reality this show is a complete fantasy, yet is grounding in reality.  It is an absurd plot, but the super rich are often an absurd bunch, who are willing to spend money in absurd ways. 

In this shot the Heritage Club flag is to the left of US flag. 

 

US Flag in Trading Places 1983

 

One of the best Christmas movies to come out of the 1980s is Trading Places 1983.  It is a comedy that throws Philly punches to the gut, in a time when art over ruled the modern day checklist of politically correct boxes that permeate modern movies as of 2020. It is vulgar, funny, and captures a certain Christmas magic in a bottle starring Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy, and Jamie Lee Curtis in their prime.

The US flag appears several times in the movie.  During the meeting at the club where Louis Winthrop III is cast out from the elite circles of high society.  It also appears at the police station where we can see a balding Miss Piggy, Frank Oz, walking by a US flag and the bottom half of a US flag is visible behind a tree. 

 

In the opening montage the US flag can be seen hanging off a building in front of Philadelphia's City Hall.  However the marquee of the a low brow movie theater can be seen as well. 
 

 

 

Yukon Territory and Northwest Territory have their flags North Polarized for Christmas

 

Merry Christmas! It is that time to deck the flags with the Spirit of Christmas! In this case the fraternal flag pairs of Yukon North Polarized with the Northwest Territories flags.  The dog from the Grinch replaces the Huskie of Yukon, likewise the Holly replaces the 'provincial' flower of fireweed.  The flag of England has is made Christmas present with big blue bow.  The heraldic designs have been made into Christmas Trees.  

The Flag of the Northwest Territories is only slightly modified.  The fox is wearing a Santa Hat and the gold bars are changed into a multicolored rainbow of light bulbs. Finally, the blue river line has become the aurora borealis.  

Joyeux Noël! C'est le moment d'arborer les drapeaux avec l'Esprit de Noël ! Dans ce cas, les paires de drapeaux fraternels du Yukon Nord polarisé avec les drapeaux des Territoires du Nord-Ouest. Le chien du Grinch remplace le Huskie du Yukon, de même que le Houx remplace la fleur « provinciale » de l'épilobe. Le drapeau de l'Angleterre est fait cadeau de Noël avec un grand arc bleu. Les motifs héraldiques ont été transformés en arbres de Noël.

Le drapeau des Territoires du Nord-Ouest n'est que légèrement modifié. Le renard porte un bonnet de Noel et les lingots d'or se transforment en un arc-en-ciel multicolore d'ampoules. Enfin, la ligne bleue de la rivière est devenue les aurores boréales.

 

Alberta Flag North Polarized for Christmas and the Winter Holiday!

 

Here we have the Alberta flag that has been North Polarized! Below it is with its 'Fraternal Flag Partner' which is Washington BC.  BC can mean by Canada, below Canada or beside Canada.

US Flag in the SantaClaus, The Movie 1985

 

An extra large wholesome Santa movie from 1985, SantaClaus The Movie stars Dudley Moore as the original Elf Story.  Like Buddy the Elf, this Christmas movie captures the core feels of the 1980s, since it was released in 1985, far from the 1970s and 1990s.  

The US flag makes a cameo in several scenes.  When a greedy captain of the Toy Industry, pitches his idea for Christmas II for March 25th, a US flag can be seen in the background.  The US flag also appear in a larger form during a court case dealing with poor toy making policies of a Biz Toys. 

The US flag also appears as painted wood working over a portrait of George Washington.  

No expense was spared on this million dollar Christmas Play.  It has faded from memory somewhat, but it captures the feels of the 1980s.  It is fun reminder of classical Santa.

The color of a Santa Hat can convey your preference!  Red is for Christian, Green for Islam, Blue for Jewish, Orange for Sikh, Yellow for Buddhist, Black for Shaman, Brown for Hindu, White for the Hippie, Purple for Whatever, and Pink for the Atheist.  

Free City Flag from Free Guy 2019

 

The movie Free Guy 2021 is your modern Pinocchio story for the 21st century.  In this movie a computer program becomes self aware and touches on those tried and true tested themes of following ones dreams.  Like any good movie it recycles old themes and packages them into something new.  

In one sequence we are privileged to see the flag of Free City which has light purple field with the city seal in the center.  It has yellow ring that reads "The Municipality of Free City."  The seal design features the silhouette of the skyline with the Sun at the horizon in the background.

In one scene you can see the NPC come to life walk by store that is selling post card flags for the virtual city of Free City.  By coincidence there is an orange flag in the background behind Free Guy's right shoulder.

Texas-Nunavut Connection- Texas Looks a Bit Like Nunavut!

 

Or rather, it is Nunavut that looks a little bit like Texas!  You decide.  For the record, California is the linked like this to British Columbia, Idaho looks a bit like Yukon Territory, Minnesota looks like Manitoba, Wyoming looks a bit like Saskatchewan, and finally Nevada fills her up like Alberta. 

It's as if somebody smashed Texas with a hammer and it broke into 100 little pieces.  Or if you were to smoosh all the islands back, it'd be the spitting image of Texas.

Ou plutôt, c'est le Nunavut qui ressemble un peu au Texas! Tu décides. Pour la petite histoire, la Californie est ainsi liée à la Colombie-Britannique, l'Idaho ressemble un peu au Territoire du Yukon, le Minnesota ressemble au Manitoba, le Wyoming ressemble un peu à la Saskatchewan, et enfin le Nevada la comble comme l'Alberta.

C’est comme si quelqu’un avait brisé le Texas avec un marteau et qu’il s’était brisé en 100 petits morceaux.  Ou si vous deviez ramener toutes les îles, ce serait l’image crachant du Texas.

GONZO'S Flag from Muppet's Take Manhattan - 1984

 

The Muppets Take Manhattan was perhaps the pinnacle of classic Muppets with Jim Henson and Frank Oz. A Gonzo flag appears in one of the flashback scenes.  We never get a clear view of the flag since it flutters in the wind.  But in the image above you can see the 'O', 'N', and 'Z' of GONZO.

Here is the King of Off the Wall comments.  Apparently Gonzo was the old school of left field, snarky comments.  However, Gonzo can't help himself, his brain is always out of step for the dead pan, weirdo black comedy.

Classroom Pennant Flags in Hard Ball 2001

 

Pennants are seen hanging along the top chalkboard in the movie Hard Ball 2001, that starred Keanu Reeves.  The Pennants looks like they have been designed by the children in the classroom and have various unique designs and colors.  In this film Keanu stars as a baseball little league coach for an inner city hard luck team.  He is drafted into the position, due to his gambling debts. 

Here the teacher at the school is now making by 2020 standards an inappropriate gesture.  In 2001, the OK symbol was a positive and safe.  But things can change with just a few memes and jokes.  Who knows what is next on the chopping block for the newer generations.  Perhaps the peace sign with two fingers will go?  Maybe thumbs up or live long and prosper hand will become sinful and racist icons?  Only time will tell.  And just maybe the OK symbol will go back to just meaning OK?  

 

The flag of Wales from 1807 to 1953

The current flag of Wales is a bicolour with a red dragon.  However the older version of the red dragon on a patch of grass was flew much longer from 1807 until 1953.  The current flag of Wales was adopted in during the MOD era, so it is the Welsh MOD flag.  It will not be until the year 2105 that the MOD flag was finally have surpassed the original grandfather version of the Wales flag.  Also note all six limbs are easily distinguishable in the older version.  In the modern Wales flag it looks like only five limbs are visible. 

Also there was a daddy version from 1953-1959, that gets no love.  The Daddy Welsh flag basically contributed to the background of the modern flag, being a horizontal bicolour element, as found in the modern, Grandson version. 

오징어 게임 - Squid Game Flags 2021

 

The most unique Squid Game 오징어 게임 flag to appear in occurs during the Marble Game.  A dark green flag with a yellow disc with a missing green green triangle is visible.   Note that it is in the scene where first and last (alpha & omega) have switched jackets as 001 is wearing 456's jacket, while 456 is wearing 001's jacket.  It is a Yin and Yang thing, that is an important philosophy and outlook with life.  The South Korean flag has this symbol, but modified such that the counterpoint dots are not visible. 

Flags are essential elements in sports and games.  In South Korea's Squid Game, a victory black and yellow checker flag is waved for the winners as signal that they won and to stop playing. 

Squid Game is sing of the times, that says a lot without getting preachy.  Basically, the view has free reign to project his or her own view as to what the show is about.  In the end it is more than just a game show. Squid Game 2021 is not Double Dare, rather its daring race your life.  In the Tug of War game a pink 'Double Dare' like flag marks the center point.

Unique Flag in Toys - 1992 Film

 

One the movies are good for is putting fashions and feels into a bottle.  In 1992, Robin Williams starred in Toys.  If Gateway Computers mated with a 1990s modern art project, this is the resultant barf.  There is something attractive about the film, and all the actors give their A game.  But it stinks like a glittering turd.  It could have been the 1990s Willy Wonka, but not something bland and square makes this movie poke along.  Although a bad movie, its worth watching once every ten years. 

A unique bumper car swallowtail pennant is visible during the funeral scene.  Another flag can be seen on the castle.  

As general rule of thumb, if a movie has a way too extravagant intro that goes on, and on, in the beginning, chances are its going to be crappy movie. Somehow all the effort and budget goes into the first five minutes and then its crap afterwards.  

The best part of the movie the Bill Nye-Talking Heads video  MTV makes a small cameo, when indeed during the 1990s MTV was music television. 

American Spectrum Flag

 

A pride flag for all Americans to feel the loves.

The New Trans Flag, The Trans-Temporal Flag

Do you ever feel like you were born in the wrong Generation?  Perhaps you were assigned Generation X but you identify as Generation Z.  Maybe you are in to Steampunk?  Perhaps the Renaissance Fair?  Maybe you are born in 2005 and you feel like a Baby Boomer.  Or rather you are a Boomer and feel as though you should be a part of the Generation V, the Greatest Generation that won WWII.  Generation W is the Boomer Gang.  Or maybe you are a millennial, which is really a bi-millennial since the original, true millennials are all dead.  The millennials included Leif Erikson and Æthelred II the Unready.  

This flag represents those persons who refuse to remain in the assigned temporal generation.  It is a Trans flag of sorts, Trans-Temporal to be exact.  

The flag represents a double rainbow as a symbolic portal of crossing through time.  If you have ever seen a Double Rainbow in the wild, then you have been invited to be a part the chosen ones for the mystical Trans-Temporal lifestyle. 

The canton on the side represents all the organic tones of humanity.  Likewise on the white chevron has stars painted in infrared and ultra violet.  Thus one needs special goggles or unique biological modifications to see the thirteen stars.  There are 15 stripes based upon Isaac Newton's dissection of visible light; red, orange, yellow, green, blue (cyan), indigo (what we consider blue), and violet.  

So if you don't fit into your assigned Generation feel free to let these colours fly, time is a human construct after all.

Corto Maltese Flag from Suicide Squad 2021

 

One of the joys or sad things about being a vexillologist is that fictional countries stick out like sore thumbs.  Of course its a comic book movie, which requires a level of disbelief.  However Hollywood can't pull one past us.  Nonetheless in DC's Suicide Squad film from 2021, it takes place on the fictional island nation off the coast of South America - Corto Maltese. 

The flag is a tribar of red, yellow and blue with the national coat of arms in the center.  In the red stripe is a yellow Argentinian-link Sun.  In the blue stripe is a yellow star.  The Coat of Arms have two wildly pointed deer that resembles the HBC with two crossed swords behind the shield.

1763 Proclamation Flag at Demarcation Point in Pennsylvania

 

The 1763 Proclamation flag was first hoisted along the original line as defined by King George III.  This Royal Proclamation was issued on October 7, 1763 during the George Greenville administration of Original Congress (Parliament).   Among several things, it became the border for several English Colonies from West Florida to Quebec.  During this time Canada, Quebec, and the 13+ North American Colonies were united under one government.  

The 1763 Proclamation used water sheds to set the western border of the several colonies, as well as the northern borders for the lost colonies of East and West Florida and southern borders of Quebec.  Basically the Eastern Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes were supposed to become an Indian Reserve/Reservation.  Before the American Revolution these borders would move, but as a heritage trail, the original 1763 borders is demarcated and honored with this flag.  

The 1763 Proclamation Flag uses the old UK flag pattern of Scotland and England, without St. Patrick's Cross since it was not included until 1801, after 'Ireland' became a part of the UK.  Likewise there is a red border with white broken edges to represent a fence.  

This is a cultural heritage flag, that does not have any irredential connotation.  It can be used to underscore this moment in history to educate Americans, Canadians, and the British about their common heritage.   It is an educational-geographic flag that can be flown anywhere in Canada and the United States that made up this border in 1763.
