Sri Lanka and Venice - Is the Pen mightier than Sword?

Flag of Sri Lanka
Lion with Sword

The flag of Sri Lanka shares a similar element with the flag of Venice. Lions appear on both flags. The Lion of Sri Lanka holds a mighty sword, while the lion of Venice holds the work of a pen.

There is a delicate balance between the East and the West. There are essentially two major anthems of the Old World. The Western Half sing hymns and songs in the wake of Adam and Eve, while the Eastern Half is in tune with Cosmic Conciousness. Rather the invisible third eye of perception leads the East along a delicate and serendipitous echo of cosmic mind. In conjuction, the West is totally blind to the concept or perception of the invisible 'third eye.' But times are changing, as the West opens its third eye the East is better able to tune into the teachings of Abraham.

Flag of Venice
Lion with Book

Both flags are composed with two components. The flag of Venice has a winged lion holding open a Holy Book with its right hand, and the arms of the various Venetian groups. The flag of Sri Lanka also has a lion but holding a sword with its right hand.

Combining these flags reminds us of the old proverb that, "The Pen is Mightier than the Sword."

Venice and Sri Lanka differ like night and day. They are culturally light years away. Their religion, ethnic, and language are as alien as a coconut and a mushroom. Yet they are connected, as in a special way as is night and day. Venice like day sings and prays in a monotone voice as a nation under one God, while Sri Lanka like night, chants and meditates in a cosmic symphony under a magnificent multitude of stars and Gods.

Sri Lanka and Venice are ancient nations, wise and rich roots that penetrate the deepest of deep hearts, romantic lands blessed by the Divine.

Sicily and Buthan - Fraternal Twins

Enter the Year of the Dragon...

Flag of Sicily

The flag of Sicily is attached to the flag of Bhutan in that strange and serendipitous way of flag symmetry. United by a similar pattern and pallet of colours - gold and red with a bend. The flag of Sicily is parted with a regular dexter bend while the flag of Bhutan is parted in a sinister bend.

Although they are a world away they sit at the nexus or rift between two realms of reality. Sicily is nestled between Africa and Europe while Bhutan teeters between India and China. Both nations are elements of their neighboring worlds, both with slightly northern tilts. Sicily is closer in a cultural orbit to Europe while Bhutan feels a stronger gravity with China.

Flag of Bhutan

Mystical animals often considered monsters are charged on their center. The mighty and strong dragon sits proudly on Bhutan, while Sicily has the most famous of all Gorgons - Medusa. The dragon is balanced on three balls, while Medusa's head rests on three legs.

They are union of East and West, for their ancient names are one in the same. The ancients called our world 'Middle Earth' with good reason. It was assumed to be in between heaven and hell. Likewise when you literally translate China and Mediterranean in to English it becomes one in the same 'Middle Earth.'

Sicily is an island on the greatest sea of our earth, likewise Bhutan is an island amongst the clouds on the greatest mountain range of our earth.

Skroob Flag - from Space Balls 1987

Skroob Flag Space Balls 1987

The Scroob flag uses the colours black and grey. Centered is a black circle. On circle is a black leg in a 'sinister kick.'

This is the flag of the Chief Executive Officer of Spaceballs Empire- President Scroob.

The flag of 'President Spaceball' is Skroob, which is a mixed up version of Brooks. Ironically, Mel Brooks thought President Skoorb would be too silly. Ya think? President Lem Skoorb would have worked just fine.

Space Balls Flag

Modern Rendition of Space Balls Flag

Watch out, there are Spaceballs out there! They want your money and will even charge you for air. If you are not careful they'll bind you in a knot and take the farm.

Space Balls 1987 was an epic parody on Star Wars directed by Mel Brooks. Mel Brooks also stars in the movie as the greedy chief executive officer - Skroob - of Space Balls.

Spaceballs Empire Flag

The Space Ball flag consists of a black field with the name 'Space Balls' written in grey along the bottom. In the center are several grey balls.

Although we are not in a space culture by any developed means, we do have 'Space Balls' that would love to charge for everything, even things that should be free.

Pitt Island or Rekohu - the lesser island in the Chatham Archipelago

Flag for Rekohu or Pitt Island - New Zealand

This is a flag for Pitt Island which is a part of the Chatham Islands archipelago. The flag of Pitt Island uses the colours black, white and green. Centered is fern which is a national symbol for New Zealand. The green fern lies on a white dexter bend dividing the black field into two triangular parts.

Pit Island was originally home to the Moriori who were a different race from the more populous Maori.

Like the tragedy of Native American in the United States, the British/New Zealand Government played aboriginal vs aboriginal. The UK arrived with Maori from New Zealand in 1835 to wipe out the Moriori. The result was the Moriori Genocide.

Ross Island Flag

Ross Island Flag

The Ross Island Flag is based upon the birthplace of its discoverer - Sir James Clark Ross. He was born in London on the zero year of the 19th century. Ross discovered this island in 1841, and it was subsequently named after him.

The flag is basically a Scandinavian version of the flag of London but with a black fimbration around the cross.

Snares Islands Flag - New Zealand

Flag of Snares Island

The Snares Islands are approximately 200 km south of South Island New Zealand. It is home to a healthy population of penguins.

The colours of the flag are based on the colours on the snare penguin - black, white, orange, and red. Also the red star with a white fimbration is modeled of after the national stars from the current national flag.

Bounty Islands Flag for New Zealand

Flag of the Bounty Islands

Not to be confused with Bounty Island, the Bounty Islands belong to New Zealand and consist of 13 main islets in the South Pacific.

Thus accordingly this flag has 13 stripes. There are three large red stripes, four large blue stripes and six thin white stripes. The white stripes are actually fimbrations around the red stripes. This is done in conjunction with the Red New Zealand stars that have a white fimbriation.

The 13 islands are
(1) Depot Island
(2) Lion Island
(3) Penguin Island
(4) Proclamation Island
(5) Ranfurly Island
(6) Ruatara Island
(7) Spider Island
(8) Tunnel Island
(9) Castle Island
(10) Funnel Island
(11) Prion Island
(12) Molly Cap
(13) North Rock

These islands are also antipodes to Europe, at Boulle-Mernard France. Another coincidence is that these islands were discovered the same year the United States become a legal nation under the Constitution in 1788. Thus the flag of the Bounty Island flag bears some resemblance to their up and over cousins to the north. The US Government is the same age as these thirteen magically shaped isles.

Berkner Island Flag - Antarctica

Flag of Berkner Island, Antarctica

Berkner Island was one of the few places that was truly discovered in modern times, and by an American team at that.

Ice completely surrounds this island. Berkner island came to our awareness in 1957 under the leadership of Finn Ronne, who ironically was not a Finn.

However he was born in Scandinavia. Ethnically a Norwegian but yet, an all American Citizen, who made his home in Maryland. In 1957, the US Navy was his source of income.

This flag is based upon the American Flag - since America truly discovered this Hoth like world down under.

The canton actually depicts a constellation - Octans the eight pointed star compass. Octans is at the bottom of our celestial sphere. The eight pointed star refers to the 'Southern Star' - Sigma Octantis.

Also the stripes are reversed to having white as the dominant color. Instead there are seven white stripes and six red stripes.

Alexander Island Flag - Antarctica

Alexander Island Flag - Antarctica

The flag of Alexander Island is based upon the flag of the Russian Navy because it was discovered by a Russian Citizen - Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen in 1821. However Bellingshausen was born in what is now modern day Estonia, thus the colour black is added on the left and right sides.

The South African Prince Edwards Island

Prince Edward Island of South Africa

Located in between Africa and Antarctica. The colours of the flag are green, brown, yellow, orange, white and blue. The design is exactly the same as the National Flag of South Africa. Brown was incorporated since it a colour on the new national coat of arms.

Coral Sea Islands Flag

Coral Sea Islands Flag, Australia

This flag is based on the Australian Flag. Instead of blue it has a hot pink field. Also the stars have been replaced with two types of starfish. But note the starfish are universal-substitutive, so any kind of starfish can be used. The seven pointed stars of the Southern Cross are skinny five armed starfish of various colours - red, yellow, indigo, light green. Also the smaller five pointed star is replaced with a stout purple star fish. Likewise the large Commonwealth Star has been replaced with a light pink sand dollar. The only element that has remained the same is the English Red Cross, since this is the dominant and national language of Australia. Finally rainbow triangles have replaced the cut up Scottish Flag and broken St. Patrick's red cross.

Starting from one o'clock the colours are yellow, orange, maroon, brown, violet, indigo, blue, and green. The bright colours are reflective of a rainbow and the multitude of colours found at coral reefs. Additionally it is based on the liberal peace and love flags of the mainland. It is also a reminder of various transgendered species that inhabit a coral reef, reminding us that in the natural world gender is not always certain.

Ashmore and Cartier flag

The colours are based on the popular aboriginal flag, black, red and yellow.

Auckland Islands Flag

Flag of Auckland Island

Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand, while Auckland Island is a remote island south of the main islands. Thus the flag is essentially a reversed image of the New Zealand Flag.

The UK flag in off center near the bottom for two reasons. First because Auckland Island is south of Auckland City. And second because New Zealand is in the South Pacific.

New Zealand already is down under, but there are two Aucklands in New Zealand - Auckland City on North Island, and Auckland Island which is south of South Island.

Flag of Macquarie Island

The canton is based on the Scottish Version of the UK Union Flag in honor of the islands namesake, Lachlan Macquarie, who was born in Scotland. The field is synonymous with the flag of Australia, its national body.

Did you ever notice all the trophies that a school collects?

Antipodes Islands Flag

Antipodes Island Flag

The Antipodes Islands are nearly so at the complete opposite of the United Kingdom from down under New Zealand to up over England.

Basically its two British Ensigns - one in the upper hoist and the other in the lower fly. The upper right half is black which represents night, while the lower left half is blue which represent day. Thus when persons enjoy a warm winter midnight snack in London, England there are others who simultaneously are enjoying a summer afternoon picnic in a lovely meadow on the other side of the world.

The star on blue represents the sun our closest star, while the star on black represents Alpha Centaur the closest star to the sun.

Chatham Islands Flag

Kermadec Islands Flag

Flag of New Zealand's 'Earth Quake Islands'
Kermadec Islands Flag

These group of islands in the South Pacific are administered by New Zealand. They are named after Captain Jean Michael Houn Kermadec who visited the area at the end of the 18th century. This flag is thus a merge of designs of the French and New Zealand Flags - current and future. Future because whenever New Zealand chooses a new national flag the southern cross will be used and the star design will be red outlined with white.

The saw tooth design shows that this part of New Zealand lies along one of the most active boundaries of the Pacific Rim and is witness to many earthquakes every year.

They also represent the five main islands.
(1) Raoul Island - the largest
(2) Macauley Island - 2nd largest
(3) Curtis Island - 3rd largest
(4) Nugent Island - northern most
(5) Cheeseman Island

Heard and McDonald Islands Flag

Flag of Heard and McDonald Islands

At nearly the midpoint between Antarctica, Australia and Africa are the Heard and McDonald Islands. The islands were named after two different US American Captains. First Captain John Heard charted the islands on November 25, 1853. The next month and year later a UK ship under the command of William McDonald charted the new 'McDonald' Islands. But the first person to set foot on any of these islands was Captain Erasmus Darwin Rogers in 1855.

The flag of Heard and McDonalds islands is based on the current national flag of Australia. However the stars have been replaced by snowflakes and the UK Canton has been altered. Both the English Red Cross and eight Scottish triangles are white. Likewise the interstitial white is blue like the rest of the flag. Only the cross of St. Patrick remains in its original format. Another interesting fact is that it is home to Australia's tallest mountain - Mawson Peak. However since Mawson Peak is closer to Antarctica it only holds the tallest tallest of tall via a political rubric. Mount Kosciuszko is still the tallest mountain on the continent.

Flags from Titanic film from 1997 by James Cameroon

Flag on the Titanic
British Blue Ensign

The HMS Titanic was a part of the the White Star Line and nationally flagged under the United Kingdom, 100 years ago. It flew the British Blue Ensign at is stern as it was accurately depicted in the film.

The most recent and grand retelling of this tragic story was told by James Cameroon in 1997. Its ground breaking special effects, top notch directing and stellar acting led it eleven academy awards.

Flag pole where Jack and Rose met

1912 was a tragic bitter sweet year for the world and technology. Once again in 2012 we stand at a great precipice of change, technology, and society. No matter what, there will always be Jacks and Roses who choose to stare down the unknown and fear, in order to follow the dreams of their heart, as did the director of the film.

District 9 - the flag of the Multi-Nation

Multi-National United Flags

District 9 (2009) was an science fiction movie that crosses the line on contemporary society. What if aliens landed twenty years ago and were not what we expected?

The story goes like this, a mother ship 'crash' lands on earth in South Africa, Johannesburg. The population of aliens are apparently from the lowers classes or casts of society, who were never taught the proper know how of running the ship. Subsequently they quickly wear off as novelty and wear out their welcome. Unable to adapt to modern earth society they become a burden on society.

Subsequently the cold blooded heart of a new kind of inter-species racism rears its ugly head.

Afro-European American Geocentric State Flags

There 17 US states that share a latitude with both Europe and Africa. They are North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arizona. The second group includes Virgina, Kentucky, Kansas, West Virginia, Colorado, Utah and Illinois. And finally for the last group there is Missouri, California, and Nevada.

Furthermore these geographically Europe and African aligned states can be broken down into three categories.

There are seven states that have a southern tilt. Geographically they have soil that is totally south of the European Continent and a small portion crosses into the Continental Afro-European Belt. The Afro-European Belt is a small region where Africa and Europe are at the same latitude. It is approximately 36 degrees North to 37 degrees 21' North.

The Southern Tilted Geographically Afro-European States include
the upper south

(1) North Carolina
(2) Tennessee
(3) Arkansas
(4) Texas
(5) Oklahoma
(6) New Mexico
(7) Arizona

The next group of is the geographic compliment to the Southern tilted states. Thier northern reigions are parallel to Europe while their southern halves cross into the Afro-European Belt.

The Northern Tilted Geographically Afro-European States include
the light south

(1) Virgina
(2) Kentucky
(3) Kansas
(4) West Virgina
(5) Colorado
(6) Utah
(7) Illinois

Finally there are three states that have territory that extend beyond both ends of the Afro-European Belt into wholly pure European and African latitudes.

North & South states include
(1) Missouri
(2) California
(3) Nevada.

The other 26 northern states are totally Euro-centric with respect to their latitude.

All African American Geocentric State Flag

African American Geocentric Flag
US States that are parallel to Africa

There are seven US states that are completly at the same latitude of Africa - South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, and Hawaii. These are the states of the Deep South.

African American Flag - made by an American

This flag was made by Davis Hammons originally born in Springfield, Illinois 1943. The neat coincidence about Illinois is that it has a partial Afro-Centric geographic orientation. There are 24 US states that have some or all land on par latitude with Africa. Seven are totally below the continent of Europe and seventeen are on par both continents - not including islands of either continent but the mainland only. Hammons later settled in New York and created an African USA American Pride flag.

Unlike the horizontal tri-bar Marcus Gravy black, green, and red flag - Hammons' flag was created by a home grown American. Marcus Gravy was born in Jamaica. Although the famous Pan-Nationalist African flag was created in New York City. That flag is for persons of African Heritage all over the world.

However Hammons' flag is for persons of African heritage who are United States Citizens.
