Blue and White Pennants from Whisper of the Heart 1997 or Mimi o Sumaseba 1995

Kono Eiga wa Ole no Nippon

Anyone who has lived in Japan will recognize that Studio Ghibli captured the essence of life in Japan.  I discovered this movie before the might of that magical mouse.  This post is for all my Kansai Gaidai Homies!

Dreams really do come true.  Of vexillological note are the white and blue pennants found on an old sailing model vessel.   They can be seen on the tops of the masts.

Here is the entire panorama you never get to see in the movie.  You're gonna have to slide to left or right to see the entire antique store.   Enjoy!

Sales Banners in Whisper of the Heart 1997

A 100 yen (about 1 dollar) sale sign can be seen in the background.  It is yellow with red print.
You can see awning banners in red in front of our heroine.
Hard to see are the Train banners hanging from the middle of the cart. If you lived in Japan before the "Ketai Denwa" revolution you will recognize this film.
Here a store Keio has a long building banner-flag announcing that shopping is great.

Zissou Flag from the movie Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004

The Zissou flag is square shaped.  It is primarily composed of the colours white, blue, yellow, red, and light green.  In the movie it gets altered by Steve Zissou's long lost son who adds four symbols to the corners.

In the upper hoist side is a red letter E with a life preserver.  The E stands for Esteban du Plantier who was Steve's best friend who is attacked by the Jaguar Shark.  Esteban is played by Seymour Cassel.  In the upper fly side is a red letter K with a dolphin.  The K stands for Klas Daimler, the German second in command, who looks deeply up to Steve Zissou played by William Dafoe.  In the lower fly side is a red letter B with an anchor.   And finally in the lower hoist side is the letter N with a octopus.  The N stands for Ned, Steve's long lost son played by Owen Wilson.

SPOILER ALERT: DO NOT CLICK VIDEO IF YOU INTEND TO WATCH THE MOVIE

Scuba Diver Pennant from Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004

In the film Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004, starring Bill Murray, a diver pennant flag appears.  It is best seen during the hot air balloon scene.

Here Cate Blanchett sits opposite Bill Murray in a balloon connect to ship, on the sea, in the air, with a scuba diver flag in the on its end.

The blue and white scuba flag pennant with a white silhouette of a diver is probably the best type of scuba flag since persons unfamilar with the abstract diver flags of "Alpha" and white striped red flag can easily make sense that this flag is related to scuba diving.

Operation Hennessey Flag in Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004

The flag for Operation Hennessey appears in the cinematic draughmarkedymy (dramatic-artistic-comedy) Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004.  This film is a quiet visually appealing narration on life.  Part satire, part art house, part comedy, part action, part drama, part whatever, it is proverbially a buried treasure under the sea, that has gained a cult classic status.  It stands apart of the regular humdrum Hollywood action-hero-love drill-set, making fun of itself and leaves the audience guessing.  It also fits into the timeless class or cinematic classics as a retro movie set somewhere in the 1970s, as it was made in the 20-ohs.

Of vexillological interest is the Operation Hennessy Flag that is composed of the colours black, white, and grey.

Yankee International Maritime Y-flag from Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004

The Yankee International Maritime Coded Flag for Y appears as a car flag in Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004.  It has something written upon it which is nearly impossible to determine.  Zissou is sitting in the back wearing a red knit cap.
