1763 Proclamation Flag at Demarcation Point in Pennsylvania

 

The 1763 Proclamation flag was first hoisted along the original line as defined by King George III.  This Royal Proclamation was issued on October 7, 1763 during the George Greenville administration of Original Congress (Parliament).   Among several things, it became the border for several English Colonies from West Florida to Quebec.  During this time Canada, Quebec, and the 13+ North American Colonies were united under one government.  

The 1763 Proclamation used water sheds to set the western border of the several colonies, as well as the northern borders for the lost colonies of East and West Florida and southern borders of Quebec.  Basically the Eastern Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes were supposed to become an Indian Reserve/Reservation.  Before the American Revolution these borders would move, but as a heritage trail, the original 1763 borders is demarcated and honored with this flag.  

The 1763 Proclamation Flag uses the old UK flag pattern of Scotland and England, without St. Patrick's Cross since it was not included until 1801, after 'Ireland' became a part of the UK.  Likewise there is a red border with white broken edges to represent a fence.  

This is a cultural heritage flag, that does not have any irredential connotation.  It can be used to underscore this moment in history to educate Americans, Canadians, and the British about their common heritage.   It is an educational-geographic flag that can be flown anywhere in Canada and the United States that made up this border in 1763. 

Broadkill Beach Flag, Delaware

 

Broadkill Beach is a beach with, as of 2021, problematic name by some.  Imagine if there was a Dudekill Beach or Teenkill Beach?  No so matter, the flag of Broadkill Beach features a red crab with on a yellow background. 

Broadkill Beach is a tiny sliver of beach, that is free.  The hard part is finding parking.  There is a small lot next to the beach entrance.  Many people park on Bay Avenue, but it is kinda' illegal.  If you ever visit you see what I mean.  

There is a small bike and shore eatery right next to the place.  You can rent bikes.  It is tiny town with a rather infamous name.  

Machias Seal Island - The Binational Flag

 

On July 29, 2021 the Binational Flag of Machias Seal Island was hoisted upon an isle that belongs to both Canada and the United States—Machias Seal Island.  

This is not the first time where both nations had 'joint' custody over an area of North America.   Shortly after the War of 1812, the UK (Hudson Bay Company) and the US jointly occupied Oregon-Columbia Territory from 1818 until 1846.  This time frame was ruled under James Monroe until James Polk, or rather from Robert Jenkinson until Robert Peel.  

However, Machias Seal Island has been under control of both governments since 1776, or rather since 1867.  One could claim Canadian, American Citizenship, or both if born here. 

Note that the fictional Wolverine was not born in Canada de jure.  Reason being in 1845, where we see the opening scene of his origins in The Wolverine 2013, Canada was not yet federated.  Canada was federated officially in 1867.  Further, Wolverine's bone claws are first shown to come into existence in the North West Territories 1845.  Wolverine may have been born in British Columbia when this area was jointly occupied by the US and UK in its entirety during the 1820s to1830s.  Rumor has it that Wolverine's half-brother, Victor Creed, was born south of the 49th that became Washington State while Jeremiah Logan was born north of the 49th which would become British Columbia.  Or was it the other way around?  

The Binational Machias Seal Island flag is dedicated to inspiring and talented Canadian-Americans like: Dan Aykroyd, Pamela Anderson, Justin Bieber, Jim Carrey, Michael J. Fox, Wayne Gretsky, Alanis Morissette, Elon Musk, and "Superman."   And posthumously to Peter Jennings and Alex Trabek.

Le 29 Juillet 2021, le drapeau binational de l'île Machias Seal a été hissé sur une île appartenant à la fois au Canada et aux États-Unis, l'île Machias Seal.

Ce n'est pas la première fois que les deux nations ont la garde « conjointe » d'une région de l'Amérique du Nord. Peu de temps après la guerre de 1812, le Royaume-Uni (Compagnie de la Baie d'Hudson) et les États-Unis ont occupé conjointement le territoire de l'Oregon et de la Colombie de 1818 à 1846. The Dixon & Mason Survey Line Flag

 

To be a Sheldon Cooper, the Mason-Dixon line is not a line, but is rather a series of lines.  You can even argue that they should not be called lines since they are really arcs, due to the curvature of the Earth.  So how does The Mason-Dixon Arcs sound?   Well we wont go that deep but...

The most famous Mason-Dixon line is a line of Latitude: 39°43' north.  The least known Mason-Dixon line is the "North Line" and it is a line of longitude that falls along the 75° West.  Finally the Tangent line that is the main division between Maryland and Delaware does not dived the North and South, but rather divided East and West.  

The Mason-Dixon Line or rather the Chuck-Jerry Line is a cultural phenomenon in the USA.  Originally is was a border commission by King George III to settle a dispute between two slave holding colonies: Pennsylvania and Maryland.  Nonetheless, the Mason-Dixon Line has transformed into an iconic divide between the North and South.  

Some historians just use the upper line of latitude at 39° 43' North as the Mason-Dixon Line.  Others extend it as the divide between free and slave territories, such that the northern borders of Kentucky and Missouri are the 'Mason-Dixon Line.' Finally some just follow the actual three survey lines charted by Charles and Jeremiah. Who is right?  Well in today's understanding of a multilateral view of history and things, they are all right depending on your point of view, sorta' like a quantum string theory view of things. 

 Based upon these various interpretations, two flags have already been created.  One for the line at latitude at 39° 43' North, which you can read about it here.  Another that follows the divide between slave and free soil as it was in 1861. And finally here is flag that follows the official survey line from 1763 to 1767 that divides Maryland and Delaware by East-to-West as well as Pennsylvania and Maryland by North-to-South. 

 The design of the flag is based upon the County Flags of the surveyors who spelled out the Mason-Dixon Line. Mr. Mason was born in southern England, Gloucestershire County, on April 1728.  Mr. Dixon was born in northern England, Durham County, in July 27, 1733.   Gloucestershire County's flag has a centered blue cross, outlined with light beige, and green filling up the outer quarters.  Durham County's flag is horizontal bicolour of yellow on top and blue underneath with a counter coloured cross in the center.  

The Dixon & Mason Survey Flag is based upon the pattern of the Maryland Flag and modified versions of the Gloucestershire and Durham County flags.  A new colour added is white to the Survey Line Flag of Dixon & Mason for the outline of Gloucestershire's component and for Durham the central circle in the cross has a white disc.  

This flag directly honors Charles and Jerry for setting up the Mason-Dixon Line.   It should only be flown along the lines where the stones are marked off between Maryland with Pennsylvania/Delaware, where the famous M-P Milestones can be found.  Thus this flag can only be flown across the Tangent Line, North Line and along 39°43' until the last marker in western Pennsylvania/West Virginia.

As for the other two Mason-Dixon Flags:  The 39°43' north Flag should only be flown at that latitude across the US; the Penn-Calvert flag follows the divide between free and slave soil as it was in 1861 from Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania to Poston, Arizona.  But note that all three flags overlap Pennsylvania-Maryland border. 

 

 

 

 

It was quite a project when these two mathematically educated surveyors arrived in Philadelphia on Novermber 15, 1763.  They finished their survey in 1767.  

Infinity Chamber 2017 - Prisoner Badge

 

Classical science fiction is a rare item these days.  Most of the time explosions and karate chops steal the center stage of things Sci-Fi.  But in 2017 the Infinity Chamber came to be; it was Sci-Fi to the max.  Carried by a plot line and on the mark acting and directing, it is something of a quirk in today's cartoony Sci-Fi.  Infinity Chamber takes points a finger at the potential pitfalls of power, combined with AI and sheep society. 

It says a lot on a shoe string budget, and the depth is something the young and stupid will find boring.  A dash of 12:01 pm, a bit of the Matrix, and "Vawallah."   

Of vexilological interest is the arm band of the inmate.  It resembles a flag or is could just be a bar code.  We really don't know, the movie never explains, and this is okay.  Since it is on the arm badge/flag position it could have any meaning: type of prisoner, jail unit, listed crimes, etc.  The badge also appears on the collar, but at 90 degree angle.  It could easily be mistaken as military uniform.  

AI in the workforce is a common theme in many movies, but we are already there and it will continue to expand.  Someday much of the prison staff will be replaced by Alexa or Cortana. In 20 years, one can only imagine how much smarter AI will become.  

The Republic of Ezo Seal - 蝦夷共和国 : a short lived nation, 1869 Japan

 The Republic of Ezo existed from about 2 Mercury Years, that's six months for you Earthlings.  From January 17, 1860 until June 27, 1869 this Northern Japanese Republic made an effort to break away from the Imperial Clan of Southern Japan.  Its capital was in Hokkaido Island in the city of Hokadate.  French Republicans were a key Western catalyst to help create this forlorn nation.

Lancaster County Flag, Pennsylvania

 Lancaster County flag feathers a Conestoga Wagon on a seal within an outline of a red heart.  Over the wagon are two long guns and the outer wing ring it is written: 

                                       • County of Lancaster ~ Pennsylvania • Founded May 10, 1729

It looks like there is some corn cobs laying infront of the wagon. 

Lancaster was the 4th county carved in William Penn's Colony of Pennsylvania.  Besides the Connestoga Wagon, Lancaster is famous for Shoefly Pie, and abundant Amish community.

 Note that Lancaster City has its own flag, nonetheless Lancaster City can fly the Lancaster Conestoga County flag, Pennsylvania flag and the national stars and stripes flag.

The Goodwin-Baylor Line Flag: a flag in Membrance of the Sacrifice in New Mexico Territory

 

The Goodwin-Baylor Line flag is based upon a fusion of the old Maine flag with the Kentucky Orphan's Brigade.  Since the first Territorial Governor is debatable. 

On August 1, 1861 John Robert Baylor became the first Territorial Governor of Arizona as recognized by the Confederacy.  And carved out a south bound Arizona out of New Mexico Territory such that Arizona would have hogged the border with Mexico, spanning the distance from Southern California to West Texas.  

However in 1863 the Union government divided New Mexico Territory along the 107th  meridian.  In the northern, and subsequently official case, John Noble Goodwin became the 1st official governor of Arizona Territory on December 29, 1863.

Since Goodwin was born in Maine, we have to old Maine flag that had a pine tree.  Since Baylor was from Kentucky and fought for the Confederacy a few design ques were taken from the Orphan's Brigade of Kentucky.  

As one reckons with a proper orientation of map to flag, the blue quadrants are where the Union and Confederacy agreed that this area would become Arizona and New Mexico, but along the buff areas are where they didn't see eye to eye.

Algeria Tennessee Tilt Flag

 

Here is the second version of Algeria's Tennessee Tilt flag.  What is a Tennessee Tilt?  Basically when a state, nation, or county is on par with latitude of Europe and Africa, but it has certain tilt towards Africa, that is a Tennessee Tilt.

NAVA Interest Area Meeting: online, Flag Design Gauntlet▬ hosted by Joe Gorman

The first presentation for the Area Interest Meeting; Flag Design Gauntlet was by Russ Adams.  Adams gave an insightful presentation of his proposed flag for NAVA 55.  His proposed flag played a clever trick by turning the V in the NAVA flag into a Roman numeral V and adding a white L along the hoist and bottom.  Unfortunately Adam's flag was not chosen.  One observation was that it looked too much like the NAVA flag. 

To the left are several other flags that were proposed to represent NAVA's 55th meeting.  Ted Kaye also shared a simple memory trick as to know which NAVA meeting is next.  Just think of the most recent Superbowl.  NAVA meetings are providentially synced to the number of the Superbowl.  NAVA's first meeting and the first Superbowl took place in 1967.  Ergo Superbowl LIX and NAVA LIX will take place in the year 2025. 

The second presentation was by about the recently adopted (99.98% official) flag for Yorba Linda, California.  It was graciously presented by a former Mayor of Yorba Linda — Beth Haney. Haney was also on the committee that led the process for the adopted a flag for this municipality.

To Beth's surprise her submission nearly became the official flag of Yorba Linda, as a runner up.  However the official is the one with a yellow star on navy blue with an uneven, curved, white division towards the fly.  There were several submissions for the flag and much of the community was engaged.  The winning design was slightly modified,  the original designer had the yellow star towards the fly.  So in a way the flag of Yorba Linda is a  syncretic design, where more than one person is responsible for the design.

Mayor Haney also presented some the submissions by children.  This flag was been digitized to the left.  Perhaps if this submission made into a 'crisp  computer' version, it could have become the official flag of Yorba Linda, California? 

In the third presentation the winner of the Official Flag for the City of Old Town, Maine was given by our talented host, Joe Gorman.  In the center is a red canoe on horizontal tri-bar of green, white, green. 

This flag was so poplar that it inspired heraldic organizations to create coats of arms and other versions of the flag. 

Finally our host Joe Gorman gave presentation by proxy for Brian Cham.  Cham is graphic designer in New Zealand and has taken a special interest in designing a new flag for state of Massachusetts. 

 

色丹島旗

Labrador Flag

 

The flag of Labrador up top and Newfoundland and Labrador below.  This image is from Justin Barbour's video when he trekked across Labrador towards the Quebec border.  

To clarify Labrador is a part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.  Newfoundland is the island that looks like its pinky is sticking out, while Labrador is the eastern coastline of continental Canada.  Perhaps someday when there is population explosion in Labrador, it could become the 14th province or territory of Canada. 

And yes, Labrador dogs get their name from this region.  They were bred mostly in Newfoundland, so a better name would be Newfoundland Retriever?  Nonetheless, the beloved and loyal Canadian dog from Labrador has captured the hearts of many Americans, American than live in the suburbs.  In contrast, Americans that live in an urban atmosphere typically have a love affair with the Pitt Bull.  

Funny thing is that there are more Labrador Retrievers than there are people in Labrador.  Labrador is certainly off radar of people in the US.     

The Labrador flag is an uneven horizontal tribar of white, green, and sky blue. 

Flags in Mannequin 1987

 

In 1987 the true American version of Pinnochio was born.  Remember, the tale of Pinnochio is not a Disney Property, however Mannequin is.  Born in the heart of the 1980s, and released in 1987.  Mannequin was far from the 1970s and 1990s, that it just oozes the spirit of the 1980s.  A theme from the movie it to create art of substance and character, and indeed this gem from 1987 was totally outrageous. 

Flags appear in the introductory cartoon montage.  In it we get a short history of the world, from ancient Egypt to modern days.  Our lucky heroine is given a gift from the Gods to travel through time to see the world in its varied forms.  In one spice she is seen leading a navigator in Medieval Italian dress across an ocean.  The fore mast has a green pennant while the aft mast has a red pennant.  Finally the navigator in the stern is holding  a flag with has an American style motif. 

 Here you can see the classic Key Stone Cop-Night Security officer is played by George W. Bailey.   The badge on the his shoulder read Prince Security for the fictional Prince and Company Department Store that was located in Center City Philadelphia, next to Philadelphia's City Hall. 

 

 

The US flag and 'county-city' flag of Philadelphia can be seen in the background.  These are also known as the iconic Rocky Steps of Philadelphia.  Mannequin is fairly tale from Pennsylvania.  It was constructed with a patient heart and soul, full of character.  This is one of America's best Valentine's Day's movies, as least from the 1980s.  

AMC Flag from TURИ - Washington's Spies 2014

 

AMC produced an excellent show about the American Revolution called TURИ Washington's Spies that originally aired from 2014 to 2017.  They get a lot right and take a few creative liberties.  However, like any production that reproduces the past little errors sneak in, that only a few would recognize.  Иonetheless, if you want to get the feels of 1776 this series puts the flavor of the action on a delightful stage. 

The most unique flag to appear in the show is during the opening animated sequence, whereby an AMC flag is waved.  Иote the background is assumed to be white and the first letter from AMC is lower case, while the second letter is an upper case M, followed by a letter c.  

The neat thing is, as the computer generated aMC flag waves it turns into different kinds of flag.  It become the Betsy Ross flag, followed by the UK flag.  However the UK flag is that of the modern version.  During the US Revolution/Colonial Rebellion, the UK flag did not have St. Patrick's Cross. Иonetheless it should not take you out the wonderful story.  A 50 US starred flag would, but this small anachronistic detail can be easily overlooked, likewise most people in the US usually overlook this fact as well.   This is must watch for any student of history.  

Thin Red Line Flag

 

The thin red line flag is a flag that is dedicated to fallen firemen.  You can see it here next the US flag with the state flag of Pennsylvania. 

Lunar Twilight 2020 - the last night: Shima Uta

 

And then there was one. Tonight the last glimmer of 2020 streaks across the heavens.  Look up because the last Moon of 2020 fades to darkness.  After a day of waiting, on January 14, 2021 will the first Moon of 2021 begin. 

Since we started with a Japanese artist to contemplate Lunar Twilight, it only makes sense to close with another.  The follow song stems from men from Yamanashi Prefecture.  It is on the other side of Mt. Fuji.   However, this song stems from a folk song from Okinawa as converted into modern music in 1993.   

It is sad song of love and letting go, as we transition from one year to the next, it is more than appropriate.  This is an accumulation of the themes for Lunar Twilight 2020.  

Lunar Twilight 2020 - the eleventh night: Aha! the reprise with Deadpool

Lunar Twilight will be gone in a night or two.  The final embers of yesteryear is upon us.  When the last Moon of 2020 finally fades from the night sky on January 14, 2021, the first Moon of 2021 shall being anew with 2021.  

Of vexillological note in Deadpool 2, the ionic national symbol of Canada can be seen in the background: a red maple leaf on white. 

Coincidentally the scene is reflective of the original Aha! video where a man of artistic dimensions crosses over into another reality to invite a lovely lady upon a wonder lust adventure of the heart.  Although the hero of graphic novel will be gone in a day or two, they share a special moment in this realm of stories. 

Thus it is of perfect concord that a comic book movie should reprise for that ever enchanting song from 1984.  It is song that beckons us to follow our hearts and make that leap to the other side of mystery and the unknown.  Although danger may be present, this unreal dream of art is able to make an impression more real than reality itself.  

Like memories past that gain a certain gravity after they are gone, Lunar Twilight is that extra goodbye kiss from yesteryear that can sooth the aching heart.

Lunar Twilight 2020 - tenth night: Enya Only Time

Lunar Twilight 2020 is almost ended.  We have less than five more days until the first Moon of 2021 is created.  Right now, the last Moon of 2020 is nearly at an end. 

In Enya's video Only Time, there is some writing and what looks like several crosses and or other symbols.  As Enya walks through the seasons you can see direct symbolism with her song.  

Much of Enya's work harmonizes totally with the Spirit of Lunar Twilight.  Enya's music is especially appropriate during Lunar Twilight. 

 

This song resonates especially with Lunar Twilight.  A crystal clear resonance is conveyed with Enya's poetic rhythms painted hypnotic tones of pondering grace.

Lunar Twilight 2020 - the ninth night: Suspended in Time — Xanadu

The final approach 2021's first full night is upon us.  On January 14, 2021 will then, only, the nights of 2021 begin in earnest; since the first cycle of a 2021 Moon will start on that evening.  Until then, after sunset, the knights of 2020 trespass into the New Year.  

Time Suspension Crystals - a symbol?

During this transgression of yesteryear, one can savor the graces and gifts of long lost memories.  It is also a time of clemency, and of a time to say goodbye.

 Never forget about the gleaning gems of the past.  To pine for the past, upon wishes granted, during Lunar Twilight is good.  For the dark times of the now allow the enchanting echoes of previous wonders to cast a spell upon memory.

 Cherish with loving detachment all of yesteryear's good.  Amen.   

Lunar Twilight 2020 - eighth night: Goodnight Moon

 

Wishing You a Lovely Lunar Twilight!

Above this the Lunar Twilight Candlemast.  It is starts out as row of candles at different lengths.  These candles countdown the remaining nights of last years Moon.  Ya see, for the first few nights of January, the nights is revert back to the 2020 after sunset, because first Moon of January is always born in December, unless there is a New Moon on New Years Eve. 

It will not be until January 15, that the first Moon of 2021 will begin its cycle.  So at the beginning of Lunar Twilight, which starts on the first evening of January 1, 2021 at sunset when it gets dark, the entire candlemast is lit.  Until the shortest candle burns out, then all the candles are blown out till the next evening.  Thus the first few nights of January always revert back to yesteryear, allowing extra time for clemency and to say goodbye. 

Lunar Twilight is a time to reflect and ponder that gift that was yesteryear.  2020 was a lovely year, although a tragedy for some it was blessing for all.  Things can always get worse, and the gift of each year of life is something to cherish, no matter what.  

 Of vexillological note is the one flag that appears.  In the picture of the cow jumping over the Moon, one can see a little mailbox with flag.  Also notice that the artwork is of the shapeshifting type, that varies page by page, as if the book were like a dream.  

 2020, I got your back!  You were the best year yet, Good Night 2020!

Lunar Twilight 2020 - the seventh night: Wash It Away by Black Lab

The last Moon of 2020 is in its final phase.  Although by the solar point of view, 2021 has become.  Yet at night, a remaining fraction of 2020 lights up the night sky.  Reason being, the first Moon of January was created last year on December 14, 2020.  Until, this last ember dissolves from the night's sky, then the days of and nights of 2021 will begin anew. 

In the video of the live performance at the Mercury, you can see a video watermark in the lower right hand corner.  This little design is an indicator of ownership.  In this case, the video mark is a lower case b to represent the band Black Lab.  

In this video, the song Wash It Away is performed.  This song beseeches Grace.  One of the most uncomfortable trials of life is that of regret and attaining the skill of simply letting go. Consequently this is a deep theme, to touch upon, during any Lunar Twilight.

In the end, some jewels of the human experience are forged in misery.  Upon a certain time, they are released and healed by mysterious forces.  What it becomes is something beautiful, precious, and powerful.  For, to attain these blinding jewels, one must suffer a humiliating, dreadful failure.  This humiliation can not be artificially forged, but comes upon the smile of the Fates, and delivered only whence the proper choice is made. Father Time and the Mother of Graces stand by to allow such tragedies to crystalize into something good.
